Is Doctor Who Headed to HBO After Disney+ Split? HBO Chief Finally Answers
Doctor Who faces a cliffhanger of its own: Disney+ cancelled the series after just two seasons of partnership with the BBC, leaving a global sci-fi icon in limbo and fans worldwide wondering what comes next.
Doctor Who fans have been stuck in limbo for a minute. The Disney+ era ended after just two seasons of the BBC partnership, which left a lot of question marks hanging over one of TV's biggest global franchises. We did get a bit of reassurance earlier this year: a Christmas special is still happening and the show itself is not going away. Now we have a new wrinkle worth paying attention to: the HBO question.
So... is HBO actually in the mix?
Radio Times asked HBO boss Casey Bloys point-blank if he would be interested in getting involved with Doctor Who. No big announcement, no grand plan, but he did not shut the door either.
'It has not been presented to us. As with anything, I would say 'never say never' - it is just not something that I know about.'
Translation: nobody has formally pitched it to HBO, but if someone does, they will listen.
Why an HBO-BBC team-up would make sense right now
- HBO is already knee-deep in another British cultural giant with its Harry Potter TV adaptation. The first teaser is out, and the plan is to launch around the holidays.
- HBO Max became available to British audiences on March 26. In theory, that timing could make a BBC/HBO Max setup clean for UK viewers, with episodes living on both BBC and Max at home.
- Library-wise, HBO has the kind of TV depth that pairs nicely with a broad-appeal series like Who: think House of the Dragon, the medical drama The Pitt, and a third season of Euphoria on the way. That is a different lane than Disney was playing in with the show.
Where the BBC stands
The BBC is not ruling anything out. Back in March, Lindsay Salt, the BBC's director of drama commissioning, echoed the same keep-our-options-open vibe.
'We will wait and see how we figure it out. HBO have been great partners creatively. There is a lot of stuff that is changing out there.'
Bottom line
Here is the state of play: the Disney+ partnership is over after two seasons, but Doctor Who is still alive, with a Christmas special locked in. HBO is not actively pursuing it, yet Casey Bloys left the door cracked open. Given HBO's current slate and timing, there are real reasons it could click if the BBC brings it to them. For now, cautious optimism is fair. Just do not mistake polite interest for a deal. Not yet.
