A rollover crash that flipped Tiger Woods’ Land Rover on a two-lane road in Jupiter Island, Florida, led to his March 27, 2026 arrest on charges of DUI, property damage and refusal, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Tiger Woods is back in the headlines for the wrong reason. He rolled his Land Rover on a quiet two-lane road in Jupiter Island, Florida, on March 27, 2026, and walked away without injuries — but he left in handcuffs. Here is what actually happened, why he was charged, and how authorities say it went down.

The crash, step by step

Just after 2 p.m. local time, deputies responded to a rollover crash on Jupiter Island. When they arrived, they found two vehicles: a pickup truck towing a pressure-cleaner trailer and a dark Land Rover that had tipped onto the driver side. Photos from the scene showed the SUV on its side and, in some angles, propped awkwardly with visible structural damage.

According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, the pickup driver looked in his mirror and saw the Land Rover coming up fast. The pickup tried to edge right, but there was no shoulder. At the last second, the Land Rover swerved to avoid smashing into the truck, clipped the back end of the trailer, and flipped. Woods, who was behind the wheel, reportedly crawled out through the passenger-side window. No injuries were reported.

Why he was arrested

Deputies on scene suspected impairment and called in DUI investigators. They ran several tests. Woods told them about his past injuries and surgeries — something the sheriff said they factored in — but investigators still believed he showed signs of impairment.

'Mr. Woods did a breathalyzer test with triple zeros, but when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused, so he’s been charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.'

That 0.000 breath test means no alcohol, but Florida DUI law also covers drugs. Refusing a urine test is itself a chargeable offense under the state’s implied-consent rules, which is why the charges include both DUI and refusal, plus property damage tied to the crash.

The sheriff also made a point of saying the arrest would have happened the same way regardless of the name attached.

Mugshot, custody, release

Woods’s mugshot came out the same day: blue shirt, straight-on stare, not much expression. In custody, the sheriff said they kept him away from the general population for safety reasons — not to coddle him, but to prevent other inmates from trying to make a moment out of it. Per Florida statute, he spent around eight hours at the Martin County Jail and was released around 11 p.m. ET that night. He was later seen riding shotgun in a black SUV, still in the blue polo from his booking photo. He has not publicly commented on the arrest or the crash.

Context: this is not his first high-speed headline

Woods’s recent history with cars is rough. In February 2021, he crashed alone in Southern California, suffering a shattered ankle and two leg fractures. Investigators said there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs; the cause was listed as unsafe speed for the conditions. While recovering, he told Golf Digest in May 2021 that the rehab was more painful than anything he had experienced and that his day-to-day focus was simple: walk on his own, one step at a time.

Before that, in 2017, Florida police found him asleep at the wheel and arrested him on suspicion of DUI. Toxicology showed Vicodin, Xanax, and other substances in his system. He pleaded guilty to reckless driving and entered a first-time DUI diversion program.

Trump weighs in (and a fake rumor)

Within hours of the 2026 crash, President Donald Trump called Woods a very close friend and expressed sympathy, saying there had been an accident and he did not want to elaborate. Shortly after, a viral post claimed Trump would pardon Woods so he could play in the upcoming Masters. That statement was fake. For background: the two have golfed together, and Trump awarded Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019 during his first term.
