Sony CEO hints Spider-Man: Brand New Day is built to make you cry, teasing big feelings without spilling what’ll cause the waterworks.

Speaking onstage at the BofA Securities 2026 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in New York, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Ravi Ahuja said the newest Spider- Man swings not just on action but on feeling — and that the reaction has been unmistakable.

It ’s a lot of fun. But it’s emotional. Some people come away crying, so that is something clearly that resonated with the audience,” Ahuja said.

He added that even Sony was caught off guard by just how big the movie became.

“It is a tremendous result. We obviously had not forecast that. We thought it would do incredibly well, but we did not know that would do that well,” he acknowledged.

The setup hits hard

Part of what’s connecting, Ahuja suggested, is where Spider-Man: Brand New Day finds Peter Parker. After the end of No Way Home, Peter is living in a world that doesn’t remember him. He’s thrown himself into fighting crime full-time, but the isolation starts to push him toward a transformation he may not be able to control.

The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and led by a cast that brings familiar faces and new energy:

The numbers are massive

The movie has led the box office for six consecutive weeks and helped power a robust summer for theaters. Per Variety, it has crossed $2.4 billion worldwide, ranking among the biggest theatrical releases ever.
