One condition stands between Chris Rock and an Oscars comeback after 2022 Slapgate
Chris Rock isn’t ruling out another Oscars turn, as long as he gets something in return.
Pressed in a new Variety interview tied to his upcoming film Misty Green, Chris Rock said he still hasn’t returned to the actual Oscars telecast since the 2022 onstage slap by Will Smith — though he has popped into Oscar- night parties. If he’s going back to the ceremony itself, he wants a nomination attached.
“The only way I’ll go back is if I’m nominated, and I’m not getting nominated. And that’s OK. We’ll deal with that if it happens. Like, let’s manage expectations.”
Rock also told the magazine he wishes the 2022 incident hadn’t happened, and he downplayed it in the broader scheme of things, saying a bad day for him isn’t the worst thing in the world.
His new film
The interview centered on Misty Green, which Rock wrote, directed and co-stars in. The drama follows Misty, played by Rosalind Eleazar, a gifted actress trying to rebuild her life after addiction. Her shot at a comeback comes from a director from her past, Jordan — played by Rock — who has to decide whether to forgive her after her career stalls for smacking a colleague.
The storyline inevitably echoes the Oscars moment that’s followed Rock for two years, but he said the parallel wasn’t planned and he hadn’t even considered the connection until it came up in conversation with Variety.
