A brief history of two missing episodes

Season 1 had ten episodes, like God and the Game of Thrones tradition intended. Then, in March 2023, Deadline reported that season 2 was being trimmed to eight — after the initial plan had been for another ten, which meant script rewrites. HBO insisted the trim was "story-driven," which is a phrase executives say the way you say "I'm fine" while visibly not being fine, and the timing lined up suspiciously well with Warner Bros. Discovery's era of aggressive belt-tightening.

And here's where the baggage comes in. Executive producer and writer Sara Hess, asked about the reduced order, told Entertainment Weekly (via Forbes):

"It wasn't really our choice."

So why is season 3 also eight?

Showrunner Ryan Condal told press after the season 2 finale: "I haven't had discussions with HBO about it," adding that he expected the show's cadence to stay the same from season 2 onward. To be fair — and I hate being fair — season 3 made the format work:

• The season opened with the Battle of the Gullet, the naval bloodbath fans were furious got bumped out of season 2;
• It closed with the Battle of Tumbleton, meaning the two priciest sequences in show history served as bookends;
• Critics broadly called it one of the show's best seasons yet, which is annoying for those of us who enjoy a grudge.

Condal told Deadline the writers mapped seasons 3 and 4 together and decided it would be fun to "bookend the season with the two biggest sequences we had ever done." Fun for whom, Ryan? My cortisol?

The fine print

Season 4 will be the last, and per recent reporting, it's also sticking to eight episodes despite HBO brass once dangling the word "supersized" in front of us like a dragon treat. So the final tally for the whole Dance: 34 episodes, six fewer than the author's dream. Pour one out. Then watch the finale again, because the dragons do look expensive.
