On the brink, Alex juggles love, life, and ambition in 'Youth' episode 2 recap

The gut punch lands on campus. When Alex drives her son Ruari back to school, they unlock his door to find the room cleared out — and then spot all his belongings tossed in a dumpster. Two students sneer and call Ruari a “pervert.” He barely says a word, just asks his mom to take him home. She does.

Ruari returns to campus to find his belongings dumped in the trash.

That humiliation caps an episode that already has Alex spinning plates. At work, she and best friend/colleague Sam meet longtime client Charlotte about a new manuscript — a racy departure that Charlotte’s icy daughter insists they support. Alex pushes back, ultimately agrees to stay on the book, then quietly emails a different young writer to request more pages despite Sam’s warning the newcomer isn’t reliable.

Family duty keeps closing in. Alex’s mom, who has type 1 diabetes and already lost a toe, needs another hospital run; later, Alex reveals her mother has now lost another. Her dad has mild Alzheimer’s. And when Alex calls Ruari’s dad, Lorcan, to help get their son back on track, he announces he’s fine with Ruari taking a year off and coming to Canada to try stand-up — a plan he says the kid can’t handle, and a message he refuses to deliver himself.

The Patrick problem

The one bright spot looks like Patrick, Alex’s old flame who reappeared in the premiere. After a quick visit to her place, they set a date, confess they want to be together, kiss, and head back to his. In a quiet moment, she opens up about her mom’s worsening health and her dad’s memory slipping — then bolts when a text from Ruari comes in.

Later, Patrick coaxes her out for a drink and a bike ride, which briefly lifts the weight. When she breaks down over her mother losing another toe, he tries to console her and gently points out she’s juggling too much at once. She pushes back, tells him she wants this, and they kiss again — before the mood shatters when she snaps that he’s never had to be serious in his life.

Alex apologizes and tells him not to follow her as she walks away. He doesn’t. When she turns around, he’s already headed in the opposite direction.
