What happened to Keisha on The Chi? Her arc runs from the pilot to the last scene of the series finale
Kiesha Williams was in The Chi's first episode and still there for its last. A look at Birgundi Baker's eight-season run on the Lena Waithe drama — how a recurring part grew into one of the show's central roles, the season 3 storyline that changed the character entirely, and what the Paramount+ series finale does with her.
Few characters on The Chi covered more ground than Kiesha Williams. When Lena Waithe's drama premiered on Showtime on 7 January 2018, Birgundi Baker's Kiesha was a recurring presence — Kevin's older sister, a track star, and the girl Emmett's mother Jada caught hiding under her son's bed. By the time the series finale streamed on Paramount+ in late July 2026, she was standing at the center of it.
The season 3 storyline that redefined her
Kiesha was promoted to series regular in season 3, in 2020 — and immediately handed the show's heaviest material. Preparing to leave the South Side for college, she vanished from a bus stop and stayed off screen for three episodes while her family searched. Viewers then learned she was being held captive by Omari, a predator hiding in plain sight in the neighborhood, who kept her chained in his basement and raped her.
Baker told Variety's After-Show at the time what was coming:
"You can expect Kiesha to fight for her life," she said, adding that the Kiesha who came home would be a completely different person.
She prepared for the role with meditation and by researching real cases of missing Black girls and women — the scenes in the basement were even shot in chronological order at her request. After her rescue, Kiesha learned she was pregnant by her captor and, in the season 3 finale, chose to keep the baby — a son she named Ronnie, after the neighborhood figure who found her. Baker was blunt with the New York Post about the aftermath: her family got her back, but couldn't share what she'd been through. "It's something no one can fully understand," she said.
The seasons in between
The years that followed gave Kiesha the longer road: motherhood, therapy, coaching, and an on-again relationship with Emmett (Jacob Latimore) — the same Emmett from that pilot-episode bed. Their history became the show's longest-running throughline, surviving his marriage to Tiff, various business ventures, and an entire ensemble's worth of chaos around them.
How the finale wrapped it up
Season 8's last episode gave Kiesha the closing image the show had been building toward: a backyard wedding to Emmett at the house Jada shared with Darnell, with her mother Nina (Tyla Abercrumbie) back for the occasion. Before the ceremony, Tiff turned up at Kiesha's door and the two made a fragile peace — Kiesha telling her the forgiveness would come eventually. The very last shot of the series belonged to three boys on bicycles riding through the neighborhood, mirroring the pilot's opening — but the finale's emotional weight sat with the couple who'd been there since episode one.
"The last day of filming was a big emotional day for all of us," Latimore — who was 19 when he started playing Emmett — told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2026.
