House of the Dragon Showrunner Ryan Condal Scores Major HBO Extension Beyond Season 4
HBO has re-upped Ryan Condal as House of the Dragon nears its Season 3 premiere and eyes a planned wrap in Season 4.
Quick update from the dragon pit: House of the Dragon Season 3 is locked in for next year, and HBO just made a very loud behind-the-scenes move to keep the show’s architect in place well past the current war.
Season 3 is almost here
Season 3 premieres worldwide on June 21, 2026. It is eight episodes, and it will stream on HBO Max. We are heading straight into the nastiest stretch of the Targaryen civil war, so expect plenty of dragonfire, double-crosses, and the kind of council-room scheming that would make Otto Hightower nod in approval.
HBO locks in Ryan Condal through 2029
Per Deadline, HBO has renewed showrunner Ryan Condal’s exclusive overall deal through 2029. Translation: the guy steering House of the Dragon through its bloodiest chapters is not going anywhere anytime soon, and HBO clearly wants him thinking beyond where this particular war ends.
Quick bit of context for how we got here: Condal first signed with HBO in 2020 after co-creating House of the Dragon with George R. R. Martin. Back then, HBO had a pile of Thrones follow-ups in development. Out of that bunch, House of the Dragon was the one that actually skipped the pilot purgatory and went straight to series. Good call, as it turns out.
- Season 3 date: June 21, 2026 (worldwide)
- Episode count: 8
- Where to watch: HBO Max
- The big move: HBO extends Ryan Condal’s exclusive overall deal through 2029 (via Deadline)
- How we got here: Condal first signed in 2020 after co-creating the series with George R. R. Martin; among several Thrones successors in development, HotD was the one given a straight-to-series order
What it means
This is HBO keeping one hand firmly on that carved Westerosi map while the current story barrels toward its tragic end. Condal’s deal gives the network a steady captain for the rest of the Dance of the Dragons and whatever comes after. If you are a Targaryen fan, the future suddenly looks a lot more stable than, say, Old Valyria’s real estate market.
