Every Game of Thrones Movie and Series Coming in 2026 and Beyond
The Game of Thrones universe is expanding with a slate of new movies and series, including prequels, sequels, and animated projects. Discover what's in development, what's confirmed, and which spin-offs didn't make the cut.
While the original Game of Thrones series has wrapped, the world of Westeros is far from finished. Fans can look forward to a wave of new movies and shows set in George R.R. Martin’s legendary universe. With seven projects currently in the pipeline, there’s plenty to keep viewers invested in the saga’s ever-expanding lore. From long-awaited prequels to fresh animated adventures, the franchise is gearing up for a major comeback. Here’s a rundown of every confirmed project, their current status, and what you can expect in the coming years.
Confirmed Releases: What’s Officially on the Way
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere on January 18, 2026. This series, based on Martin’s novella "The Hedge Knight," takes place about a century after House of the Dragon. The story follows Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) as they cross paths with members of House Targaryen. Martin and Ira Parker are at the helm as writers and executive producers, promising a fresh look at the realm’s storied past.
House of the Dragon returns for its third season in summer 2026. The prequel, which chronicles the Targaryen civil war, has captivated audiences since its debut. Season three is expected to open with the dramatic Battle of the Gullet, a pivotal moment from Martin’s "Fire & Blood." With filming wrapped and a fourth season already greenlit, the Targaryen saga shows no signs of slowing down.
In Development: New Stories Taking Shape
Aegon's Conquest is in early development, with Mattson Tomlin (The Batman 2) attached as writer. This project will explore the origins of the Targaryen dynasty, focusing on Aegon’s legendary campaign to unite Westeros. While details are scarce and updates have been limited since 2024, anticipation remains high for this foundational tale.
The Sea Snake/Nine Voyages will follow the exploits of Corlys Velaryon, first introduced in House of the Dragon. Originally planned as live-action, the series has shifted to animation due to budget constraints. Martin revealed,
"Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There's a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway."
The status of the other two animated projects remains unclear, though one is believed to be The Golden Empire.
Ten Thousand Ships centers on Nymeria, the legendary Rhoynar queen who settled in Dorne. Brian Helgeland’s original script was not picked up, but Eboni Booth is now working on a new pilot. Martin shared,
"She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, a GAME OF THRONES spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar. We're all very excited about this one… though we're still trying to figure out how we're going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles,"
highlighting the scale and ambition of the project.
More Projects and Canceled Spin-Offs
The Game of Thrones movie is in the earliest stages of development at Warner Bros., with no writer, cast, or director attached yet. While details are under wraps, speculation suggests it may not be another prequel, given the number already in the works. Fans are eager to see if this could mark a new direction for the franchise on the big screen.
The Golden Empire is another animated series in development, set in the mysterious land of Yi Ti. Martin commented,
"Over on the animated side… well, I am not allowed to talk about most of what’s happening, except to say that things are moving very fast, and I love love love some of the concept art I am seeing,"
and confirmed the working title as The Golden Empire. The show promises to explore new corners of the world never seen before in the franchise.
Several spin-offs have been announced and later canceled, including Flea Bottom, Empire of Ash (also known as a Doom of Valyria spinoff), Bloodmoon, and Snow. These projects, while no longer moving forward, reflect the franchise’s ongoing ambition to expand its universe in bold new directions.
