Eric Dane in Euphoria Season 3? The Real Story Behind His Fate
Before his death at 53, Eric Dane’s future in Euphoria’s third and final season had already been addressed. The Cal Jacobs actor, who joined the HBO drama in 2019 and returned in season 2, figured into the broader uncertainty over who would be back.
There was always a question hanging over Euphoria season 3: would Eric Dane be back as Cal Jacobs? He said yes. He tried. And now the final season is arriving without him.
Where Euphoria was when all this started
Euphoria launched in 2019 with Zendaya as Rue, a teen trying to claw her way toward sobriety. The ensemble quickly became its own pop-culture weather system: Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Maude Apatow, and Colman Domingo all factored in. HBO renewed it fast, but the gap between season 1 and season 2 stretched to nearly three years.
Season 3 was supposed to land in 2025, then got shoved down the calendar. Part of that was creator Sam Levinson pouring time into The Idol. Then the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes iced everything even longer. In other words: production took the scenic route.
Eric Dane on coming back as Cal
Dane joined Euphoria at the jump in 2019 as Cal Jacobs, Nate’s dad. He was back for season 2, where Cal’s arc ended with an arrest that made his future on the show pretty complicated. In 2022, Dane told Variety he saw a redemption path for Cal, but also admitted it is hard to write a character into the story if he is stuck behind bars.
By June 2024, he still sounded bullish about the show’s return. On Today With Hoda & Jenna, he said he was optimistic Euphoria would be back because, in his words, the audience appetite was there and the series was too strong to shelve. Like Jacob Elordi, he planned to be part of season 3.
The ALS diagnosis, and his plan to keep working
Before season 3 got rolling, Dane publicly shared his ALS diagnosis in April 2025 and said he would still report to work.
"I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time."
He meant it. That same year, he also lined up other gigs: the film Countdown, the project Kabul, and a guest spot on Brilliant Minds. And in December 2025, during a panel with I AM ALS, he talked candidly about refusing to let the disease define his purpose, saying he wasn’t the type to crawl under the covers and give up.
His death, and what the show is doing now
Eric Dane died in February 2026 at 53. His family said he spent his final days with close friends, his wife, and his two daughters. Two months later, Euphoria returns for its third and final season on April 12. Expect the show to honor Dane on-screen, as well as Angus Cloud, who died in July 2023 at 25 after an accidental overdose.
What HBO and Sam Levinson said
HBO called Dane incredibly talented and said the network was fortunate to work with him across three seasons of Euphoria, offering condolences to his loved ones. Levinson shared that he was heartbroken, calling working with Dane an honor and being his friend a gift, and closed by wishing that his memory be a blessing.
