A new Game of Thrones spin-off centered on Aegon's Conquest is being developed as both a potential HBO drama and a large-scale feature film, promising a fresh look at Westeros' legendary past.

The world of Westeros is set to expand once again, as a new project focused on Aegon's Conquest is in the works. This ambitious spin-off is being considered for two formats: a high-profile HBO drama series and a sweeping feature film on the scale of Dune. The story will explore the rise of the first Targaryen king, Aegon, who, alongside his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, united most of the continent under his rule. Their campaign took place a century before the events of House of the Dragon and three centuries before the original Game of Thrones series, with only Dorne managing to maintain its independence for years to come.

In House of the Dragon, viewers learned that Aegon's motivation for his conquest was rooted in a prophetic vision. He foresaw a devastating winter approaching from the North, threatening all of humanity. According to the prophecy, a Targaryen must sit on the Iron Throne to unite the Seven Kingdoms against this looming danger. This vision is known as the Song of Ice and Fire, the same title as George R.R. Martin's acclaimed book series.

From Dragons to the Big Screen

The idea for this spin-off first surfaced in 2024, with Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on The Batman 2, attached to the project. Since then, updates have been scarce, but the potential for a story packed with dragon battles and political intrigue remains high. Aegon, Rhaenys, and Visenya famously rode the legendary dragons Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes, making this tale a natural fit for a cinematic spectacle. Still, the success of House of the Dragon and the later seasons of Game of Thrones has shown that HBO can deliver epic fantasy on the small screen just as effectively.

Whether the project ultimately becomes a blockbuster movie or a serialized drama, fans can expect a return to the fire and blood that made the franchise a global phenomenon. The scale and ambition of Aegon's Conquest could set a new standard for adaptations in the Game of Thrones universe.

More Westeros Stories on the Horizon

The same report also hints at the possible revival of the previously shelved Jon Snow sequel series. This time, the story could include Arya Stark and take place in the distant lands of Essos, offering a fresh perspective on familiar characters. While nothing is confirmed, the prospect of seeing these fan favorites return has sparked plenty of excitement.

Meanwhile, the next chapter for Westeros arrives soon with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, premiering January 18 on HBO in the US and January 19 on Sky/NOW in the UK. House of the Dragon is also set to return for its third season later this year.
