Eight years after taking a chance on an obscure, app-only four-episode crowdfunded series about Christ’s ministry, Jonathan Roumie marks a milestone as his portrayal of Jesus becomes a career-defining and faith-deepening journey.

Jonathan Roumie just hit one of those full-circle moments you do not see coming when you sign onto a small, scrappy project. The 51-year-old actor marked a big milestone in both his career and his faith this weekend, looking back at how a four-episode experiment turned into a global phenomenon and a seven-season run playing Jesus.

From app-only experiment to worldwide hit

On Sunday, April 26, Roumie posted a reflection on Instagram about where this all started: he was invited eight years ago to play Jesus in what he describes as a tiny, crowdfunded four-episode series you could only watch on its own app. The idea was ambitious for its size — tell the story of Christ’s ministry across multiple seasons — but the budget at the time could barely cover half of season 1.

Then the thing blew up. The series became the first multi-season drama centered on the life of Jesus and set a record as the largest crowdfunded media project ever, pulling in more than $10 million just to get season 1 off the ground. Since then, it has reached more than 250 million viewers worldwide and stretched past 40 episodes, all with Roumie in the role.

Roumie on the ride so far

Roumie calls the job an honor he can not fully put into words, especially given where he was personally when it started. He shared a throwback clip and explained that, before joining the show, he was broke, overdue on bills, and running out of options. Filming that early footage left him visibly emotional, which he says came from feeling a wave of mercy and relief right when he needed it.

He also thanked fans for the support and the prayers as he prepares to play Jesus one last time, and he encouraged anyone struggling to lean on their faith the way he did when this all began. If you have followed his interviews, that tracks: back in August 2024, he told Us Weekly he never gets tired of hearing how the show affects people’s lives, and that it makes him feel like he is contributing something genuinely positive to the culture.

"Getting ready to step back into His sandals one last time."

What’s next (and why the timeline is unusual)

  • Season 7 is the final season, with production starting this month in Texas.
  • The story focus shifts to the Resurrection.
  • Because of a new distribution deal with Amazon MGM Studios, the plan is to launch the season in theaters on March 31, 2028. Yes, that is a very long runway, but that is the target date.
  • Roumie will continue in the role through this final stretch.

Where to catch up

Past seasons of The Chosen are streaming now on Amazon Prime. If you missed the early app-only days, you are definitely not alone — that early distribution choice was a very specific move for a very small show that has since outgrown every expectation, including its own.
