Why did McGee lose weight on NCIS? Sean Murray addressed the health rumours himself
Sean Murray's changing appearance has set off NCIS health rumors twice — first when season 8 premiered in 2010, then again in 2021 when the season 18 opener had McGee shot. Here's how the actor explained his 25-pound weight loss in his own words, what actually caused the speculation each time, and where Timothy McGee stands after more than two decades on the show.
When NCIS season 8 premiered in September 2010, Timothy McGee looked noticeably different. Sean Murray had dropped around 25 pounds over the hiatus, and a fan base that had watched him weekly since 2003 noticed immediately. Speculation followed — including the worried kind, with viewers wondering whether the actor was ill.
He wasn't. And unusually for this genre of celebrity rumor, the man himself shut it down in writing.
The tweet that settled it
In October 2010, Murray addressed the question directly on Twitter, explaining to fans who'd asked how he'd dropped the weight:
"14 months of no alcohol and almost no sugar. ate strictly organic," he wrote.
That was the entire method — fourteen months, no alcohol, minimal sugar, organic food. No illness, no studio mandate, no storyline requirement. The change was a personal decision, which is also why NCIS never acknowledged it on screen: McGee simply showed up to season 8 slimmer, and the show carried on as if nothing had happened. Which, canonically, nothing had.

Why the rumors came back in 2021
The speculation got a second life more than a decade later. NCIS season 18 opened with a flash- forward in which Gibbs shoots McGee — twice — and between the shock of the scene and Murray's continued lean appearance, fans started connecting dots that weren't there: was Murray sick, and was the character being written out for health reasons?
Again, no on both counts. Murray told TV Insider plainly that McGee "doesn't die," and the character stayed exactly where he's been since season 1.
For anyone keeping score: two rumor cycles, eleven years apart, both traced back to the same 25 pounds.
McGee, before and after
Some context for how long fans have had to study this face. Murray played Thackery Binx in Hocus Pocus in 1993 and appeared in JAG before joining NCIS in 2003, in season 1's seventh episode, "Sub Rosa." McGee started as the nervous MIT-trained tech guy absorbing Tony DiNozzo's hazing and grew into the team's senior field agent. Murray remains one of the last cast members whose run stretches back to that first season — and more than two decades in, the weight loss remains the single most-asked question about him.
The answer hasn't changed since 2010. He put it in one tweet, and it's still doing the work.
