Which book is Jack Ryan: Ghost War based on? Krasinski co-wrote the script himself — what it takes from Clancy, and from where
Jack Ryan: Ghost War carries Tom Clancy's name in the title, but tracking down the novel behind it takes some explaining. Here's what John Krasinski's co-written movie actually pulls from the books, where those pieces come from, and which Ryan films did it the traditional way.
Jack Ryan: Ghost War premiered on Prime Video on May 20, 2026, after a brief theatrical bow at New York's Regal Times Square on May 15. It 's billed as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, which naturally sends people looking for the Clancy novel underneath it.
There isn't one.
An original story, not an adaptation
Ghost War is credited as "based on characters by Tom Clancy" — and that's the entire paper trail. The story is an original by John Krasinski and Noah Oppenheim; the screenplay is by Aaron Rabin and Krasinski; the director is Andrew Bernstein, who previously ran episodes in season 2 of the Prime Video series. The film is a direct sequel to that series, which wrapped in 2023 after four seasons and 30 episodes, and it's the sixth Jack Ryan feature overall.
This isn't even a first for the franchise. Of the six films, two skipped the bookshelf:
- The Hunt for Red October (1990) — Clancy's 1984 debut novel, with Alec Baldwin.
- Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994) — both from the novels of the same names, with Harrison Ford.
- The Sum of All Fears (2002) — from the 1991 novel, with Ben Affleck.
- Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) — original story, with Chris Pine.
- Ghost War (2026) — original story, with Krasinski.

What it takes from Clancy — and from where
The Clancy DNA is in the characters and the career arc. Jack Ryan and James Greer both originate in The Hunt for Red October, and the film's setup — Ryan out of the CIA and working in finance — mirrors the books, where Ryan made his money as a broker before government service kept pulling him back. The ending goes further: Ryan is promoted to the CIA's Deputy Director, which is a straight lift from the novels' long game, where that job is a rung on his climb toward National Security Advisor, Vice President, and eventually the presidency. Krasinski told The Direct the roadmap is deliberate:
"Right now, we're heading on a path that always follows Clancy," he said, describing himself as a devoted fan of the books.
Mike November (Michael Kelly) and Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel), for the record, are inventions of the streaming series — Clancy never wrote either.
What the movie is actually about
Greer, now the agency's deputy director, sends Ryan and November to meet a contact in Dubai. The job collapses, MI6 officer Emma Marlowe (Sienna Miller) enters the picture, and the trail leads to Starling, a rogue black-ops program run by former soldier Liam Crown (Max Beesley). Amazon 's own synopsis calls it "the most personal, high-stakes mission any of them have ever faced," and the film plays much of it in real time across London and Dubai, over a brisk 107 minutes, scored by Ramin Djawadi.
A sequel hasn't been greenlit as of mid-2026 — but with Ryan now sitting in the deputy director's chair, the books have already written the next several moves.
