Why did 8 leave Hawkins Lab? Kali got out before the 1979 massacre — and season 5 shows where running got her
Kali was the only Hawkins Lab subject who got out on her own, years before the event that emptied the building. Stranger Things season 5 finally picks up the thread it dropped in 2017 and answers what the head start was worth.
She escaped the building that destroyed everyone else in it, and she did it before the worst night the place ever had. Season 5 is where the show finally tallies up what that bought her.
Kali Prasad was born in London in 1964 and taken by Dr. Martin Brenner in 1969, at five years old. Designated Subject 008, she developed something different from the telekinesis the program was chasing: perception manipulation. She can make people see what she wants them to see — duplicates, empty rooms, things that aren't in front of them. Which is precisely the skill set required to walk out of a guarded facility, and she used it.
The timing is the point
Her escape happened before 1979. The Hawkins Lab massacre — the night Henry Creel, unleashed by Eleven, killed every subject and most of the staff — is dated 8 September 1979. Eleven survived it. Kali wasn't in the building.

That makes her the only one of Brenner's numbered subjects to leave under her own power and on her own schedule, rather than being carried out or left on the floor.
- She found a new family — and then lost them, which the show declines to elaborate on.
- She went hunting — tracking down people who had worked at the lab, one at a time.
- She built a crew — Axel, Mick, Funshine, and Dottie, none of them powered.
- Pittsburgh — after killing a former Hawkins Lab employee there, the group moved on.
- Chicago, 1984 — an abandoned warehouse, which is where Eleven found her.
That reunion was Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister, the single most disliked episode Stranger Things ever produced. Eleven walked away from it, went home to Hawkins, and Kali was not seen again for eight years of real time.
Season 5 picks her up in a cell
Linnea Berthelsen returns in episode four, her first appearance since 2017. By November 1987 Kali has been captured and is being held in an Upside Down facility with her powers suppressed by sonic weapons. Eleven finds her there and takes her hand, and Kali sees her for the first time in three years.

She then joins Operation Beanstalk, the plan to get inside Vecna 's mind, working alongside Eleven and Max.
"She definitely dies… and for a very specific reason. If you're following Mike's 'Believe' theory, she died to save Eleven," Berthelsen told NME in 2026.
Kali is shot by enemy fire in the Upside Down during the operation, in the same sequence in which forces are trying to take Hopper. The finale, Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up, ran 128 minutes and released on 31 December 2025.
What Berthelsen says the arc was for
Her reading of the ending is that Kali's function was to stop being the alternative.
"Kali finally trusted that Eleven would be supported and protected by a community. She believed she could live on," Berthelsen said in 2026.
In season 2 Kali's entire pitch to Eleven was that family is a liability and revenge is the only thing worth having. Season 5 puts her back in front of the same person, with the Hawkins group standing behind her, and she stops arguing.
For the record: Berthelsen sat on the return for over three years, wore six different wigs in public to avoid being spotted, and shaved her head on camera for her episode four scenes. The rest of the cast didn't know she was coming back until the first table read in December 2023.
