Who killed Hal Jordan in Lanterns? The last man to see him alive was John Stewart
HBO's Green Lantern show opens with its lead already dead and spends eight episodes asking who did it. Here's what the investigation has actually established, and why the man running it has a problem.
The series tells you Hal Jordan is dead in the first episode and then makes you wait. Six episodes in, the case has a body, a method, and an awkward witness list of one.
As of September 23, 2026, the answer is not on screen. Lanterns premiered on HBO on August 16, 2026, runs eight episodes weekly, and has two left — episode 7 on September 27 and the finale on October 4. What follows is what the show has confirmed.
The crime scene
Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) is found in Rushville, Nebraska, on the bleachers of the high school football field — the same place where his 2016 case with John Stewart began. He's frozen, shot in the head at close range, and his ring is gone. Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) calls John (Aaron Pierre) to the scene and gives him until Monday before the press finds out.

The missing ring turns out to be a dead end as evidence. Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) explains that the Guardians locked Hal's original ring away on Oa and issued a new one when Guy took the Earth posting.
The witness problem
Here is why the question in the headline isn't rhetorical. Shortly before Hal turned up dead, John met him at a coffee shop. The meeting went badly enough that John broke his nose. Nobody was supposed to know about it.
In episode 6, "Bad Optics," a café waitress named Maggie (Hannah Christine Shetler) turns up and demands $314,536.27 from John to keep quiet about it. She is implied to be one of the children who survived the 2016 disaster that leveled part of Rushville.
The last confirmed person to see Hal Jordan alive is the man running the murder investigation, and somebody has receipts.
Who else is in the frame
Rushville has no shortage of people with reasons. Hal served prison time over what happened there in 2016 and came back trying to make amends, which did not land.
- Billy Macon — lost his father Will and his stepmother Zoe in the 2016 fallout, and his ex-wife Kerry to Hal. He confronts John directly in episode 6. The physics are against him: an unarmed Hal is still Hal.
- Noah Macon (Shea Pritchard) — Billy and Kerry's son, unnervingly composed, with political ambitions. Zoe's parting instruction to him was to see without being seen.
- Maggie — victim, blackmailer, and someone who was evidently watching John closely enough to catch a private meeting.
- The town — the show has spent six episodes establishing collective grievance rather than a single motive.
The witness who isn't dead
John exhumes Hal's grave and takes the ring back off the body. Inside it is a recorded backup of Hal's consciousness — a hologram of an older version of him. Its first reaction on being activated is "goddammit," which reads as a man who had already worked out that something was coming for him.
Whether an out-of-date copy of the victim can identify his own killer is the question the last two episodes exist to answer.
Lanterns was created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, with Mundy as showrunner. The premiere pulled 9.3 million viewers worldwide across three days, HBO Max 's biggest DC Studios launch, and the season sits at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
