Who dies in The Shards? The finale puts every survivor in one room and says the killer is among them
FX's The Shards spent nine episodes in 1981 Los Angeles with a prep school, a new kid, and a killer called the Trawler. Here's the full count of who the show actually buries, who walks away, and what the finale does instead of naming anyone.
The Shards kills five on screen and one off it, and still ends with nobody charged. What the last ten minutes do instead is arguably worse.
Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis's adaptation ran nine episodes on FX and Hulu from August 5 to September 9, 2026, narrated by a 17-year-old Bret (Igby Rigney) at the Buckley School. The finale, "Stairway to Heaven," was written by Juli Weiner and Charles Rogers and directed by Michael Uppendahl.
The bodies
- Katherine Latchford — the mutilated corpse on the tennis court in the pilot, on the first day of senior year. Named later as the Trawler's victim.
- Matt Kellner (Owen Painter) — Bret's secret boyfriend. Missing after episode 2, his bloodstained backpack found near a beach, a tape of his torture left on Bret's doorstep. His severed head and hands turn up in the school trophy case in episode 7.
- Corazón "Cha Cha" Rodriguez (Bella Valdes) — reigning champion on the TV dance show Dance Off!, pregnant, threatening to expose her affair with the host. Killed in the restroom in episode 5. Bret and Debbie find her.
- An unnamed teenage boy — reported dead on the news in episode 6, treated as a likely Trawler victim and never followed up.
- Spirit — Debbie's horse, decapitated, head left in her bed during finale week.
- Robert Mallory's mother — dead before the series started, after a fall down a flight of stairs. Robert's old friends tell Bret the rumor is that he pushed her.
Who survives
Rhonda Fox (Ivy Wolk) is abducted and tortured for weeks, then roller-skates bloodied onto the Dance Off! floor in episode 5. She remembers her kidnapper's "girlie smell," which turns out to be Giorgio perfume, which gets Susan Reynolds arrested at homecoming. Susan is released after 48 hours. Rhonda's parents commit her to a psychiatric hospital.
Susan herself is attacked at home in the finale and saved — or "saved" — by Thom, who tells her a story about fighting the intruder off that the show never verifies.
Terry Schaffer (Wes Bentley) opens the finale in slow motion, falling from the second-floor banister of his Hollywood Hills house during Debbie's Halloween party. He doesn't die on impact. By the end of the episode Bret says he's on life support.
"One of the most intimate ways to kill someone," Bret says in voiceover over the fall, "is to push them from a great height."
The room
Detectives Donaldson and Fregosi gather Bret, Robert, Thom, Debbie, Susan, Liz, Ryan, and Steven. They say they've come into evidence on the murders of Katherine Latchford and Matt Kellner and the kidnapping of Rhonda Fox, that the three are connected, and that whoever did them is sitting in that room. The camera pans the suspects, settles on Bret, and cuts to black.
Who pushed Terry, who killed the horse, who broke into Susan's house, and whether Bret's parents are still alive: all of it unresolved.
What the book does
Ellis never names the Trawler in the novel either. There, Robert dies after a fight with Bret, falling from an apartment; it's ruled a suicide and Bret walks. Susan starts suspecting him after spotting a bite mark on his arm matching the one she gave a masked attacker.
For the record: the season holds 55% on Rotten Tomatoes from 56 critics and 55 on Metacritic. Murphy told Variety in August 2026 that he and Ellis want at least three seasons. As of mid-September 2026, FX hasn't ordered a second.
