Who died on Outer Banks? The final season piles up five bodies
Outer Banks season 5 kept every Pogue alive and still left a trail of bodies from Morocco to Kildare. Here's every death in the final season, who nearly died, and how the man who killed JJ went out.
None of the Pogues die in season 5. Five other people do, and the last of them is Chandler Groff, the man who killed JJ.
Outer Banks released its fifth and final season on Netflix on August 20, 2026, all 10 episodes at once, ending the series at 50 episodes. The season opens in Morocco, with John B, Sarah, Pope, Kiara, Cleo and Rafe stranded and grieving JJ (Rudy Pankow), who was stabbed to death by his biological father, Groff (J. Anthony Crane), in the season 4 finale. Co-creator Josh Pate said after that finale that JJ's death had always been part of the plan.
"It was always part of the plan for the series that JJ would eventually die," Pate told Deadline.
Spoilers for the whole final season follow.

Every death in season 5
The body count starts in the premiere and runs to the last episode:
- Driss (episode 1) — Driss and his partner Zac offer the Pogues passage to Spain while planning to collect the bounty Finch has put on Kiara. When the pair are brought before Finch, he tells them he only has room for one of them in his crew and puts a gun on the table. Zac gets to it first and shoots Driss in the chest.
- Dr. Craig (episode 2) — the metalwork expert known as Medici, hired to authenticate the Blue Crown for Groff. She turns out to be working for Finch. When she demands the payment she was promised, Finch has one of his men shoot her in the head and leaves with the crown.
- Tevi and Roberto (later in the season) — two enforcers for Julio, a drug lord whose stash John B stole, sent after Sarah as leverage. They catch up with John B and Sarah at the docks and have them on the ground at gunpoint when both are shot dead by Dalia, who happens to be there to buy a staff from Sarah's mother.
- Chandler Groff (series finale) — during the hurricane, Groff tries to sail off with the stolen Royal Merchant gold. Kiara sneaks aboard, stabs him, tangles him in the rigging and hoists him up the mast. When the mast snaps, she cuts the last rope holding it, and Groff goes into the sea with it.

That's five. Every main character who started the season ends it alive.
The ones who almost died
The final season spends a lot of its tension on near misses. Rose Cameron is the closest call: Groff, who has been seeing her, catches her packing up the gold to run and strangles her until she appears dead. Wheezie shoots him in the arm, and by the time he comes back downstairs, Rose's body is gone. She survived.
Kiara gets tied to an anchor and dropped into the ocean, and her friends find her with a phone flashlight. Sarah survives a dream sequence in which John B finds her dead and a medical cliffhanger that resolves at the top of the next episode. Finch, the Corsairs' leader, survives his car plunging off a bridge the Pogues blow up. He's last seen taking the Blue Crown from Kiara and asking whether it worked to raise the dead.
How it ends for everyone else
The finale ends with Kildare evacuating ahead of a hurricane. Pate has said the storm was deliberate.
"We knew we wanted to bookend hurricanes to start and end the show," Pate told Netflix's Tudum.
Rafe turns on a lighthouse beacon that keeps the Pogues' boats off the rocks, then leaves for South America with Sofia. Pope works out where the Royal Merchant gold went down, and John B surfaces with a bar of it. The Pogues use the money to help rebuild the island and the Chateau, where John B and Sarah hold their "official" wedding in front of their baby son, whom they named JJ.
