Across nineteen seasons of NCIS, Leroy Jethro Gibbs treated his marital history like classified material — released in grudging fragments, usually over bourbon and boat-building. Piece it all together and you get four wives, three divorces, and one loss that explains everything else. Here's the full roster.

The four wives, in order

  • Shannon — his first wife and the mother of his daughter Kelly. Murdered in 1991. More on her below.
  • Diane Sterling (Melinda McGraw) — an IRS agent and wife number two. She later married Gibbs' FBI friend Tobias Fornell, and was shot dead by Sergei Mishnev in season 12.
  • Rebecca Chase (Jeri Ryan) — wife number three. The marriage ended when Gibbs discovered her affair with her own divorce lawyer. She appears just once, in season 12.
  • Stephanie Flynn (Kathleen York) — wife number four. The marriage lasted 14 months, much of it spent in Moscow for Gibbs' work. She appears once, in the season 5 episode "Ex-Files".

The one he never got over

Shannon. The full story arrived in the season 3 finale two-parter "Hiatus" in 2006: Shannon witnessed cartel dealer Pedro Hernandez murder a Marine and was due to testify. In 1991, while Gibbs was deployed for Desert Storm, the NIS agent driving Shannon and eight-year-old Kelly was shot, and the crash killed them both.

Gibbs' response stayed buried for years — he travelled to Mexico and killed Hernandez with a sniper rifle, a secret his team only uncovered much later. The prequel series NCIS: Origins has since revisited the aftermath in detail.

What the other three had in common

They were all tall redheads — just like Shannon. The show never treated that as a coincidence. Diane put it plainly in a later appearance: she'd loved Gibbs, but she could never compete with a ghost. Stephanie, for her part, reportedly rang him drunk on every anniversary until he started switching his phone off.

The prequel is retelling it right now

NCIS: Origins, with Austin Stowell as young Gibbs, has reached marriage number two. In the season 2 fall finale, aired 9 December 2025, Gibbs married Diane (Kathleen Kenny) in a surprise Vegas ceremony — officiated, in a neat cameo, by co-showrunner David J. North. Anyone who knows the original series knows exactly how that one ends.
