Although some people mistakenly believe that the actress is of Spanish origin, she is Scandinavian through and through. Alicia Amanda Vikander was born in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1988. She is three-quarters Swedish and one-quarter Finnish, as her great-aunt fled from Finland to Sweden during World War II. In addition to Swedish and English, which she speaks with a perfect pitch accent, Vikander also speaks a little French and Danish, which she studied for her role in A Royal Affair.
However, she said it is incredibly difficult to start a career in Sweden:
'You can't work as a film actor in Sweden, so when you dream of being an actor, you see yourself being on stage. My dream when I was younger was to be on the Royal Dramatic stage in Stockholm. There's a lot of pressure growing up, people asking you, "What are you going to do with your life?" I wanted to work in theater but no one let me. I mean, I tried out for theatre school three times, got to the last round but I didn't get in.'

In 2022, HBO released the comedy-drama Irma Vep, in which she starred and executive produced. In 2023, she starred in the British period drama Firebrand, playing Katherine Parr, the last wife of England's King Henry VIII (Jude Law).
Her most recent role is alongside Cate Blanchett in the black comedy Rumours, which premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May this year. According to Rotten Tomatoes, critics have given the film an 80% approval rating.
