What is Father Brown's John Light Doing Now in 2024?
John Light will be appearing in a new series later this year.
Summary
- John Light is best known for his role as Hercule Flambeau in Father Brown.
- His career spans 24 years in film, television and theater.
- The actor is tight-lipped about details of his private life.
Speaking of the 'cozy' subgenre, its main proponent in literature, radio, film, and television has always been the United Kingdom. No wonder, because no matter what happens in the lives of the characters, they are always surrounded by picturesque landscapes, as the action often takes place in the serene British countryside. And probably one of the most prominent representatives of the last decade is the mystery television series Father Brown, which has been broadcast on BBC One since 2013.
Based on the short stories of early 20th-century British author G. K. Chesterton, Father Brown follows the story of a Catholic priest, played by Mark Williams, who, like the protagonist of Grantchester, helps his parish solve sinister criminal cases. However, since the first season, fans of the series have been fascinated by a character named Hercule Flambeau, played by John Light. Let's find out what the actor is up to now, apart from starring in Father Brown.
Father Brown's Nemesis-Turned-Friend
John Light's character Hercule Flambeau was conceived by Chesterton himself and appears in his very first short story about Father Brown, The Blue Cross. In the BBC One series, Flambeau also appears early on, first introduced as an elusive jewel thief whose crimes Father Brown repeatedly prevented but could never catch.
However, the story provided one of the best redemption arcs for a character. Brown is not only a brilliant detective, but, as a priest, an incredibly empathetic man who always tries to approach even the most elusive criminals with compassion. The more the title character of the detective series and Flambeau became friends, the more the latter changed.
John Light's Acting Career in 2024
His first major projects were Alan Rudolph's comedy-drama Investigating Sex and Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks' war drama Band of Brothers. However, he got a more substantial role in the period drama North & South, an adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel of the same name, where he starred opposite Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe.
However, he is not only known for his television and film roles, but also as a stage actor. In 2014, he starred in Mark Hayhurst's play Taken at Midnight, which premiered at the Chichester Festival Theatre in London. He was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for his supporting performance.
In recent years, the actor has returned to occasional television roles. In 2021, he starred in Around the World in 80 Days with David Tennant, and in 2022, he appeared in another crime drama, Murder in Provence.
In addition, the second season of the acclaimed anthology series, legal drama Showtrial, is preparing for release. His role as well as the release date of Season 2 remain undisclosed, but it is tentatively scheduled to be released at the end of this year.
What Is Light's Personal Life Like?
As for his relationships, we only know that he was married from 2007 to 2011 to Neve Campbell, a Canadian actress best known for the Scream franchise and the TV series House of Cards and The Lincoln Lawyer. They met on the set of Investigating Sex and started dating in 2005. But sadly, after 3 full years of marriage, Campbell filed for divorce.
Unfortunately, the actor is not active in social networks (at least publicly) and prefers not to reveal details about his personal life, so it is very difficult to say what exactly he is doing in 2024 outside of acting. Therefore, we can only expect John Light to appear in the new seasons of Father Brown and Showtrial.
Father Brown Season 12 is expected to air in 2025.
