Luke Spencer's son came back to Port Charles in spring 2026 after six years away, then left again by midsummer. The show replaced him inside ten days with an actor from a very different corner of the industry.

Ethan Lovett walked back into General Hospital in April 2026 for the first time since 2020, and was gone again by the middle of July. The recast announcement landed ten days later, and it was not a name anyone in daytime recognized.

The short version of the exit is that nothing went wrong. Nathan Dean — the name Nathan Parsons now works under — came back on a four-month agreement, played it out, and left. He first aired April 17, 2026, his last episode was July 17, and the character's arc was built to fit the window: the Delilah Wilson mystery, baby Phoebe's adoption, and a flirtation with Ava Jerome (Maura West).

The character's history of leaving

Ethan has never been a permanent fixture. Head writer Robert Guza Jr. created him specifically for Parsons in 2009 after the actor lost out on the role of Dante Falconeri.

"Since it was written for me, I can play with it and make Ethan whoever I want him to be," Parsons said of the character.

The original run went January 30, 2009 to March 7, 2012, with return appearances in 2013, 2015 and 2020. James Ryan played the part for a handful of days in April 2023, a stint widely written up at the time as the most pointless recast in American daytime that year. The 2026 return was the longest stretch the character had seen in over a decade, and it was still only three months.

  • Parentage — son of Luke Spencer and Holly Sutton, with Robert Scorpio wrongly suspected as the father for most of 2009.
  • Half-siblings — Lucky and Lulu Spencer.
  • The 2012 exit — engineered by Helena Cassadine, with Ethan leaving Port Charles to keep Robert Scorpio alive.

The replacement

On July 27, 2026, General Hospital ran an on-screen card: the role of Ethan Lovett is now being played by Christian Howard. His first scenes were at the Metro Court pool, opposite Maura West.

Howard is British, born May 4, 1984 in Sunderland, and his career to that point had almost nothing to do with daytime television. He trained in kung fu from age thirteen, then karate, taekwondo and capoeira, and built a career as an actor, fight choreographer and stunt performer. He played Ken Masters in Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist in 2014 and Street Fighter: Resurrection in 2016, co-writing and choreographing on both. He doubled Jean-Claude Van Damme on U.F.O. in 2012 and John Abraham on the Bollywood film Force in 2011. He has a Lucifer credit.

No soap opera appears anywhere in his filmography before July 2026.

Fan reaction to the swap ran negative, mostly on the grounds that the recast arrived mid-storyline rather than at a clean break.

For the record: Ethan has now been played by three actors in three years — Parsons, James Ryan, and Howard — which is more turnover than the character has had storylines.
