The Grey's Anatomy star's final chapter moved with terrifying speed, and he chose to spend it in front of cameras, talking about the thing that was killing him.
Eric Dane died on February 19, 2026, at 53, in a Los Angeles hospital, roughly two years after the first symptom he didn't take seriously. The cause was ALS — amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the motor-neuron disease that progressively shuts down the body while leaving the mind intact.
The timeline, reconstructed from his own interviews, is what makes this story so brutal.
From a sore hand to a diagnosis
In late 2023 and early 2024, Dane noticed weakness in his right hand and blamed it on texting too much. His wife, Rebecca Gayheart, later remembered smaller tells — trouble with chopsticks, dropped food. Getting an answer took nine months and a chain of specialists; Dane described the moment the search escalated:
"I went and saw a neurologist, and the neurologist sent me to another neurologist and said that 'this is way above my pay grade.'"
He went public in April 2025 through People magazine, saying he was grateful to have his family beside him — and that he planned to keep acting. He meant it: he stayed on Euphoria and the Prime Video series Countdown even as the disease advanced.
The year he refused to hide
What set Dane's final months apart was how visible he chose to be:
- June 2025: in an ABC News interview, he laid out the progression without cushioning — "My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working" — and admitted he expected to lose the working arm within months.
- September 2025: his speech had slurred, he was photographed in a wheelchair, and Gayheart confirmed he needed 24/7 nursing care. That same month, he accepted an Advocate of the Year award for ALS awareness.
- February 2026: he died ten months after the public announcement, survived by Gayheart — who had withdrawn divorce proceedings after his diagnosis — and their daughters, Billie and Georgia.

He never pretended the disease was something he'd made peace with. In one of his last interviews, he described living with it in a single line:
"I will never forget those three letters. It's on me the second I wake up."
His message to his daughters, delivered publicly while he still could: "Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything." The man TV knew as McSteamy spent his last year doing the least vain thing imaginable — showing exactly what ALS does, on the record, at every stage.
