What happened at the ghost house in Ransom Canyon — and the lie Reid told about it
One night at an abandoned house sets up almost everything that goes wrong for the teenagers of Netflix's Ransom Canyon — and one boy's lie about it hangs over the whole first season.
Here's exactly what happened, and how the truth came out.
The night at the ghost house
It all goes down in episode 1, "Don't Let Me Fall," which premiered with the rest of season 1 on April 17, 2025. Police raid a teen party, and four kids — Lauren (Lizzy Greene), Lucas (Garrett Wareing), Reid (Andrew Liner), and Tim — are left to walk home when everyone else drives off. It's Reid's idea to shelter in the abandoned ghost house.
Bad call.
The floor is rotten, Tim crashes through it, and the night turns into a genuine emergency. Lucas is the one who steps up to protect the others — the episode's title comes from Lauren begging him not to let her fall — while rancher Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) arrives and pulls the kids out.
The lie
Afterward, Reid claims he was the hero of the night — that he was the one who tried to keep everything under control. Lauren knows it was really Lucas, and Lucas knows it too, but he keeps quiet.
Then Reid's father Davis (Eoin Macken) makes it worse. Eager for good press, he arranges for Reid to give a local news interview about his "heroics." Reid, terrified of disappointing his dad, even asks Lauren to make sure Lucas won't spill the truth. Lucas promises to stay silent. The lie is now official — on camera.
How it all blew up
Episode 3. At the grand reopening of Gracie's dance hall, Davis starts bragging about Reid's TV appearance to exactly the wrong person: Staten, the man who actually rescued those kids. Staten calls out the ghost house lie in front of everyone. Davis drags Reid over to deny it — and instead, Reid confesses. He wasn't a hero.
The fallout is brutal:
- Reid gets kicked out — Davis throws his own son out of the house that same night for embarrassing him.
- Staten takes him in — Reid shows up at Staten's door with nowhere to go, and his uncle-by-marriage becomes his unlikely roommate.
- Lucas stays the quiet good guy — the boy who actually helped never gets the credit, which keeps feeding the tension between him, Lauren, and Reid.
Does it matter later?
Very much. Reid's habit of caving to his father's pressure resurfaces in the season's central mystery about Randall Kirkland's death, and showrunner April Blair told TVLine in 2025 that season 2 keeps pulling at the same thread: "Reid evolves into someone who's conflicted about life."
For the record: Ransom Canyon is based on Jodi Thomas's novels — but the ghost house incident, like the show's whole mystery spine, was invented for the series.
