Vienna Blood: What Is It About & How Many Seasons Are There?
Tired of watching modern cops do their jobs? It's time to go back a century.
Procedurals were once the driving force behind television. Usually, these shows are dedicated to the everyday life of police officers, lawyers, firefighters or doctors.
All the more valuable are procedurals that not only take place in a setting not typical for the genre, but also feature rather unusual main characters. And Vienna Blood is one such project.
What is Vienna Blood About?
A brilliant young English doctor, Max Liebermann, who studied under the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, offers his help to an Austrian detective, Inspector Oskar Reinhardt.
While investigating a strange crime, the two men form a controversial, original and undoubtedly outstanding investigative team.
Vienna Blood is a Classic Procedural with a Strong Focus on Psychology
In Vienna Blood, viewers will find a classic plot when a police officer is forced to work with another specialist because of his useful skills, which will become the focus of the series. Therefore, despite the rather dark plot and the presence of violence and blood, Vienna Blood can be compared to more entertaining projects such as Castle, The Mentalist and Bones.
The focus of the investigation is on the criminals' psychology, and at one point the characters even introduce the concept of a psychological portrait of the killer (yes, just like in another procedural, Criminal Minds).
Parallel to the detective story, the viewer is shown the doctor's method, where you can observe the famous Freudian hypnosis and dream analysis, as well as the search for the causes of trauma in childhood memories.
If you are skeptical or not a fan of detective stories set in past centuries, then even in this case, you shouldn't skip Vienna Blood.
Yes, there is no modern technology, the police do not wear gloves and shoe covers, but the series shows the collection and analysis of evidence, the use of archives and, as already mentioned, the attempts to create a psychological portrait of the criminals – in general, almost all the classic elements of a modern procedural.
Vienna Blood Number of Seasons & Streaming Platforms
There are currently four seasons of Vienna Blood, the latest of which was released on August 4. In the UK, all seasons are available on iPlayer.
However, if you live in the US, you can only watch two seasons – they are available on Prime Video and Apple TV.
