True Detective comeback? Matthew McConaughey hints to the show's writer he's ready for another case

Asked in an Esquire sit-down which past project he’d actually revisit while out promoting Brothers with Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey didn’t pick a movie at all — he went straight to Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. Then he punctuated it with a little Rust-style whistle. Harrelson tried to match it and came up short, turning the moment into a quick, goofy echo of their old dynamic.

“I think if we got it right, it would be fun to go back to Rustin and Marty, True Detective,”

Season 1 of True Detective is still the touchstone for many fans — a Louisiana murder case that kept ballooning into cult symbols, the Yellow King and a rotten web of power, all anchored by two detectives who couldn’t quit each other or the job. That specific atmosphere — humid, haunted, and personal — is what McConaughey seemed to be pointing back toward.

Where Pizzolatto stands

According to Pizzolatto’s own comments, the creator has already kicked around how a Rust-and-Marty return could work. As of 2025 , he said he’d discussed getting the band back together with McConaughey and Harrelson, with a character-first idea that would put the original detectives back in each other’s orbit.

McConaughey’s stance hasn’t wavered: if Nic Pizzolatto brings him a script that’s undeniable, coming back would feel, in his words elsewhere, like it “must happen.” The swing factor is Harrelson — the Esquire reunion shows he’s game to reminisce, but whether he’ll actually sign on as Marty again remains the open question.
