Tracking Kyle Rayner’s chances in Lanterns season 1
Whether it’s wishful thinking or something more, the big Lanterns season 1 question is simple: could Kyle Rayner actually show up?
Episode 3 drops a clue that has Green Lantern diehards buzzing: we see John Stewart at art school. In the comics, that’s a key piece of Kyle Rayner’s backstory — he’s a gifted artist before the ring chooses him — which has fans wondering whether the show is folding Kyle’s origin into John’s or quietly setting up Kyle to arrive later.
So far, Kyle hasn’t appeared in the first season of Lanterns, and based on the characters already in play across this eight-episode run, a surprise cameo feels unlikely. If he shows up, the safer bet is a later chapter — either a second season or elsewhere in James Gunn ’s DC universe.
Who’s in season 1
Here’s the confirmed lineup viewers have met or been told to expect this season:
- John Stewart
- Hal Jordan
- Guy Gardner
- Kerry Kane
- William Macon
- Zoe
- Billy Macon
- Thaal Sinestro
- Antaan
The Hal-and-John partnership has already clicked with viewers, and the show’s murder-mystery setup clearly landed: HBO says the premiere drew 9.3 million views across HBO and Max in its first three days, including 6.6 million in the U.S.
Season 2 chatter
An official renewal hasn’t been announced, but co-creator Damon Lindelof has been open about where the creative team’s head is at for what comes next.
“But I think Chris Mundy has already started a new writers’ room, figuring out what new stories could be for ‘Lanterns,”
he told ScreenRant. If HBO orders more, that’s a natural spot to introduce Kyle Rayner — especially after that art-school breadcrumb. For now, Lanterns remains an eight-episode first season, and HBO has not confirmed a season 2.
