While filming Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet found himself in a tense situation with a background actor that left the cast and crew speechless. Discover what happened behind the scenes and why this moment became unforgettable.

Timothée Chalamet’s experience on the set of Josh Safdie’s sports dramedy, Marty Supreme, took an unexpected turn when a background performer delivered a threat that caught everyone off guard. The incident didn’t stem from critics or studio heads, but from someone working right alongside him during a pivotal scene.

During a recent interview, Chalamet recounted a moment while shooting a motel sequence. He was trying to provoke a reaction from a background actor, hoping to draw out a more authentic performance. Despite his efforts, the man remained unfazed, prompting Chalamet to express his frustration to director Josh Safdie.

And I’m really getting in the guy’s face, and I’m really trying to get him angry with me. I was saying to Josh [Safdie], he’s not getting angry with me, he’s not getting angry with me.

Chalamet pushed for another take, but this time, the background actor responded in a way no one expected.

I did another take, and then the guy said, ‘I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don’t want to f–k with me. You don’t want to see me angry’.

The actor ended the story with a nervous laugh, turning to Safdie and asking, “Holy s–t, who do you have me opposite, man?” Despite the tension, Chalamet acknowledged that these non-professional actors brought something special to the film.

Unconventional Casting Choices Elevate Marty Supreme

Josh Safdie’s approach to casting didn’t stop at hiring intense background talent. He also insisted on bringing in Ted Williams, famously known as ‘The Man With the Golden Voice.’ Williams, a former radio announcer whose life took a downturn due to addiction, became an internet sensation after a viral video showcased his remarkable voice while he was homeless.

Safdie remembered that video and was determined to include Williams in the project, even though union rules and logistics made it difficult. He pushed for Williams’ involvement, believing his presence would add authenticity to the film.

We need to get Ted Williams. We have to get him…[but] to bring somebody [from] out of state, with union rules and stuff like that—it’s very expensive. So that was the first time they were like, ‘Can we find someone local?’ And I said, ‘It has to be Ted Williams.’

With a cast that blended Hollywood stars and real-life personalities, Marty Supreme quickly became one of the most talked-about movies of 2025, with many predicting it could finally earn Chalamet his long-awaited Oscar.

Chalamet’s Oscar Journey: Will Marty Supreme Be the One?

Chalamet’s rise to fame began in 2017 with his breakout role in Call Me By Your Name, which earned him an Academy Award nomination the following year. Although he didn’t win, his performance was widely praised. In 2025, he was again in the Oscar conversation for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, but the award went to Adrien Brody for The Brutalist.

This year, the competition is fierce, with Chalamet facing off against Leonardo DiCaprio ( One Battle After Another), Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), and Michael B. Jordan ( Sinners ), among others. Still, many believe that his performance in Marty Supreme could finally secure him the Best Actor trophy.

As the saying goes, maybe the third time’s the charm.
