Thunderbolts: Release Date, Plot & Everything We Know about Upcoming MCU Movie
A group of anti-heroes are already on their way to your screen.
Marvel recently released the first teaser trailer for Thunderbolts. Here's everything we know about the 36th film in the universe.
What Is Thunderbolts About?
The new movie follows a group of anti-heroes called the Thunderbolts as they go on missions under government orders.
The team includes enhanced soldier Bucky Barnes, a woman with molecular instability nicknamed Ghost, enhanced super soldier U.S. Agent, Black Widow Yelena Belova, Russian super soldier Red Guardian, and Taskmaster.
Bucky Barnes first appeared in the MCU in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger. The character can also be seen in The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Bucky then played a key role in the miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Ghost made her MCU debut in the 2018 film Ant-Man and the Wasp, while U.S. Agent made his debut in the 2021 miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Yelena Belova is already familiar to Marvel fans from the Black Widow movie and the Hawkeye TV series. Red Guardian and Taskmaster also debuted in Black Widow.
Thunderbolts Was Supposed to Be Directed by James Gunn
Thunderbolts was originally going to be directed by James Gunn. The current head of DC Studios is great at bringing little-known comic book characters to the big screen. The success of Guardians of the Galaxy proved it, but in 2018, Disney fired the director and screenwriter for offensive tweets published between 2008 and 2011.
Gunn moved on to DC projects, directing The Suicide Squad, the concept of which is similar to Thunderbolts: a group of antagonists unite in the face of a common enemy. After the release of this film, the director lost interest in working on a Marvel film.
Thunderbolts is directed by Jake Schreier, whose previous credits include Beef, one of last year's top Emmy winners, the two-time Golden Globe nominated Jim Carrey series Kidding, and Lodge 49, a project about a former surfer who joins a secret order.
What Is the Song in the Thunderbolts' Trailer?
The trailer for Thunderbolts features the song Where Is My Mind by the Pixies. The track, from the band's debut album Surfer Rosa, is a common choice for movie projects.
Where Is My Mind is also featured in David Fincher's cult classic Fight Club and Jaco Van Dormael's Mr. Nobody.
Thunderbolts' Release Date
Jake Schreier's Thunderbolts is scheduled for release on May 2, 2025.
