Thora Birch Comes Out as Bisexual—and Stands With the LGBTQ+ Community
Thora Birch comes out as bisexual in an Us Weekly exclusive, crediting her Los Angeles roots and the community that raised her with shaping her identity — and pledging to give back.
Thora Birch showed up to The Abbey for its 35th anniversary and casually did something she has never really said out loud in public: she said she is bi. Not exactly a press conference, but it fits her vibe.
At The Abbey, where it all started
Birch, now 44 and very much an L.A. native, told Us Weekly at The Abbey's 35th Anniversary in West Hollywood on Wednesday, May 20, that the community she grew up around shaped who she is — and that includes being a bisexual person. Her rep added the personal geography: she grew up in West Hollywood, close enough to walk to The Abbey, which has been celebrating the LGBTQ+ community loudly and proudly since 1991. So, yeah, this place is home turf.
"Find your community where you can, stand with them, and share the love you have together — and push it outward. That is how we get through the madness. We have to stop fighting."
Quick detour into L.A. politics (because she went there)
Birch also weighed in on the upcoming mayoral race as a lifelong Angeleno, including Spencer Pratt — yes, that Spencer Pratt from The Hills — who is 42 and actively running after his home burned down in the 2025 Pacific Palisades fire. She called it a passionate race with extra scrutiny because people are split on how the fires were handled. On whether Pratt is the guy for the job, she kept it Switzerland: strong leadership is always good, and she has no reason to judge his capabilities either way.
Sequel talk: Now and Then, Hocus Pocus, and the rest of the Birch-verse
Birch is open to revisiting the 1995 coming-of-age favorite Now and Then, which followed four childhood friends through their teen years and into adulthood. She played young Teeny — the fame- obsessed, boy-crazy blonde — with Melanie Griffith (now 68) as adult Teeny. The movie also starred Christina Ricci, Demi Moore (63), Rosie O'Donnell (64), Gaby Hoffmann, and Rita Wilson (69). Wilson recently floated the idea of a sequel; Birch loves the thought and says the whole gang would be into it, even if she has no clue what shape it would take. As for whether anything is actually in motion, she joked that people should ask Michael De Luca — who ran distribution for the original at New Line Cinema back in the day.
- Now and Then 2: She is game. Rita Wilson has been nudging it publicly. Birch calls a reunion a shared dream, but no concrete plan — and she punts questions to former New Line boss Michael De Luca.
- Hocus Pocus: Disney+ dropped Hocus Pocus 2 in 2022, bringing back Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters. Birch’s Dani didn’t make that one, but she told Entertainment Tonight in October 2025 that she is very open to Hocus Pocus 3 and is curious where Dani ended up.
- Ghost World and the rest: Fans always ask about Dani, but Birch says we already know where Teeny landed. Enid from Ghost World? She jokes Enid is probably alive — emphasis on probably — and admits there’s also something nice about leaving these characters in their original time capsules.
Hocus Pocus 3 status check
In that same October 2025 window, Bette Midler (80) told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that she had seen a script for a third film — and a lot of it was brilliant. The usual caveats apply: they are still figuring out the where, the what, and, of course, the budget.
