The Witcher Season 4 Update Teases Even More Screen Time For Ciri (Plus a Dark Romance!)
Witcher fans, prepare for some disturbing developments.
Summary
- Freya Allan, who plays Ciri, has shared her impressions of Ciri's journey in Season 4.
- The actress hinted that a dark romance awaits Ciri.
- In the books, this is one of the most uncomfortable arcs, so the writers will have to work hard adapting it.
The fourth season of Netflix's The Witcher won't arrive until next year, but because it's the penultimate one, fans are paying much closer attention to its production. Anticipation is higher than ever, and it's due to the fact that the writers seem to be finally making up for their past mistakes by strictly sticking to the story created by Andrzej Sapkowski.
This truly seems to be the case as Freya Allan, who plays the role of Ciri, has hinted that her character will be facing key events in her life. According to the books, this is a rather dark period in Ciri's life, as this time she will be involved in a twisted romance.
Ciri's Future Will Be Shaped by the Events of Season 4
Besides Geralt, the main character is without a doubt Ciri, because she is the key to solving the political situation on the Continent, she is the one the Wild Hunt is interested in, and her family dynamic with Geralt and Yennefer are at the core of the plot.
So the events of the upcoming season, which will be based on the novels Time of Scorn and Baptism of Fire, should be crucial in shaping Princess Cirilla of Cintra's view of the world in which she exists.
'It's so unbelievably different from anything that I've ever played with her,' Freya Allan said in an interview with Elle. Looks like we're in for some wild plot twists.
'She has her first experience with romance, if you can even call it that, because it’s not a good relationship. She goes into a very dark part of herself that I think is going to be terrifying to look at.'
Writers Have to Be Careful with This Storyline
The Witcher Season 4 will take a rather disturbing turn. As the writers clearly want to make up for the failure of Season 2 by sticking to the source material this time around, according to Time of Contempt, Ciri is in for a rather twisted and toxic affair.
In a nutshell, Mistle (Christelle Elwin), a member of The Rats, will begin to romance Ciri and then engage her in a purely physical relationship, taking advantage of the girl's defenselessness right after another member of The Rats tries to do the same. Yes, we've already said that in the world created by Andrzej Sapkowski, human life and dignity are worth very little.
The Rats are one of the most controversial arcs in Sapkowski's novels. They are a group of teenagers who are used to robbing, looting and killing just for fun. But they are not cartoonish anti-heroes, because the Polish writer manages to portray the experience of war children who have known nothing but violence in their lives. And that's why it's important to approach The Rats storyline, and especially the one involving Mistle, with extreme caution.
How well will the writers be able to balance the perverse acts with the traumas that lead to them? How well will they be able to convey the inability to express emotions of the teenagers so accustomed to war and violence, and the tragic consequences that will doom their romance?
While Sapkowski may have gone a bit overboard in creating such a dark spin on Ciri's life, he has brought an incredibly deep psychology to the story. And so, all of this seems like an incredible task, as the adaptation must avoid romanticizing Ciri and Mistle's relationship while remaining sensitive to the issues of manipulation, harassment, and psychological trauma.
The Witcher Season 4 is expected to be released sometime in the summer of 2025.
