Season 2 had a rather surprising finale.

Season 2 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon had an unusual ending. In the final episode, Daryl and Carol unexpectedly saw hallucinations caused by guano. What do their visions mean, and what do glowing zombies have to do with it?

Daryl Had a Hallucination and Saw His Grandfather

In the tunnel, Daryl, Carol, Codron, Agnus and Fiona came upon an abandoned British military checkpoint. There they found only dead bodies.

Agnus and Fiona explained that prolonged exposure to psychoactive guano – the remains of bat droppings – could have caused them to go mad and attack each other. The guano also affected the five survivors. Daryl, Carol and Codron began to hallucinate.

Their companions put on gas masks and tried to kill Daryl to keep him from removing their protection. But Daryl fought back – he killed them and took the gas masks. He put one on himself, gave the other to Carol, and Codron, hallucinating his dead brother, ran off in an unknown direction.

Daryl hallucinated a mysterious soldier and Isabelle. The nun told Daryl that he was not supposed to die here. This happened just as Agnus and Fiona were ready to kill Daryl. The words of the ghostly Isabelle made Daryl fight with all his might against the enemies.

The soldier is the man's grandfather William Dixon, mentioned in Season 1, who died in Normandy on June 6, 1944. So Daryl's grandfather died in France, fighting for a foreign country. Daryl also found himself at the epicenter of a conflict in a foreign land. Isabelle convinced him in a vision to fight to avoid his grandfather's fate and return home alive.

Carol Saw Her Daughter in a Hallucination

Carol saw her daughter Sophia, who died in Season 2 of The Walking Dead, in her hallucinations. At the beginning of Season 2, it was revealed that Carol has not yet accepted her daughter's death. This is expressed in Carol's memories – she cannot remember her daughter's face and only sees a disfigured zombie Sophia.

However, after talking to Ash about accepting loss – he also lost a child – and the operation to save Laurent, Carol seems to have healed spiritually. The hallucination allowed her to see her normal daughter before she turned into a zombie. In other words, Carol let go of Sophia.

What Was the Cause of the Hallucinations?

In the tunnel, Daryl, Carol, and their companions began to hallucinate from the guano. However, it is hard to imagine that a pile of droppings would drive them insane so quickly. Most likely there were other factors.

In the tunnel, the survivors encountered bioluminescent zombies. At the same time, the travelers felt especially sick around the undead. Perhaps the travelers absorbed certain substances, including those secreted by the guano.

Inside the decomposing organisms, the guano may have caused chemical processes that enhanced the effects of the psychoactive feces.

What Happened to Codron?

Codron escaped somewhere and was left in the tunnel without a gas mask. Due to the influence of the guano at the beginning of Season 3, Codron can become a threat to Daryl and Carol.

He does not blame Daryl for his brother's death, but under the influence of the guano, Codron attacked Daryl and nearly killed him. There is still hope that Daryl and Carol will save him and take turns using gas masks.
