Days before her surprise exit made headlines, The Pitt star Supriya Ganesh, 28, told Us Weekly she was curious to see where the writers would take Dr. Samira Mohan in season 3 — a hint that now reads like a farewell.

HBO Max is doing what hospital dramas do best: moving the staff around like a night shift scheduling board. The Pitt just lost one of its core docs, bumped another up, and is still answering for a fan-favorite who didn’t make it back for season 2.

Supriya Ganesh is out — and the timing is a twist

Supriya Ganesh, 28, won’t be back on The Pitt after season 2. She had been on the show since it launched in 2025, playing Dr. Samira Mohan. Here’s the part that stings a little if you’re invested in Samira: before viewers even got to see how her season 2 arc lands, the exit news dropped, framed as a story decision for the character.

What makes it extra curious is that, very recently, Ganesh was still spitballing about what season 3 could look like for Samira. She told me she was genuinely curious about where the writers would take the character and felt they left Samira in an 'interesting spot.' That turned out to be a final spot, at least for now.

Who’s in, who’s out (quick version)

  • Supriya Ganesh (Dr. Samira Mohan): Exiting after season 2 in a story-driven move. She had been with the show since its 2025 premiere.
  • Ayesha Harris (Dr. Parker Ellis): Back as a series regular after recurring as the night shift resident. Promotion well earned.
  • Tracy Ifeachor (Dr. Heather Collins): Did not return for season 2. The plan, from the start, was for her fourth-year resident to move on as a doctor in future chapters of the show. She didn’t choose to leave, and a return down the line hasn’t been ruled out.

Ayesha Harris gets the bump

On the brighter side of the shake-up, Ayesha Harris is moving up to series regular. She’s been quietly great as Dr. Parker Ellis on nights, so this feels like one of those promotions that makes sense on-screen and off.

About that Tracy Ifeachor situation

Tracy Ifeachor, 41, was a breakout in season 1 as Dr. Heather Collins, then didn’t come back for season 2 — which set off a swirl of questions. Back in May 2025, she teased that season 2 would have an amazing cast and left it at that. By July 2025, it was confirmed she wouldn’t reprise the role that season. The behind-the-scenes explanation: because The Pitt follows residents evolving out of the program, Heather — a fourth-year in season 1 — would logically move on. That’s why she wasn’t in season 2, not because she opted out, and the door isn’t closed if and when the story circles back to her.

Ifeachor spent that summer thanking fans on Instagram for embracing the show’s first season and later addressed the backlash in September 2025, saying she’d learned a lot from playing a character carrying heavy emotional weight while still showing up for everyone else. She also made it clear she was already onto her next project.

'It was just such a joy and a pleasure to play Dr. Heather Collins... I don’t know where she will be next season, but I know where I’m going to be — on my next project.'
