Supergirl soars into the DCU: release date, cast, plot and must-know details
Supergirl takes flight—meet the cast, get the plot lowdown, and find out when she lands.
Supergirl is finally getting her own spotlight in James Gunn 's reset DC Universe, and it looks like a full-on space trek with feelings, fists, and one very good dog in danger. This is a new take that leans into Kara's survivor side, not just her sunny cousin energy.
What it's about
Inspired by the 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' comics, the film follows Kara on a galaxy-hopping trip with her superdog, Krypto, that kicks off on her 23rd birthday. The detour: a determined kid named Ruthye Marye Knoll asks for help on a revenge mission. From there, it's not just brawls and planets. The movie digs into what Kara went through before Earth, how that shaped her, and how she handles being a protector when the past won't let go.
The trailers also make one thing very clear: Krypto isn't just a sidekick. He gets poisoned by a villain named Krem, which puts Kara on a clock and hits a nerve. She treats Krypto like family and does not take kindly to anyone threatening him.
Craig Gillespie is directing, and the tone looks like a mix of hard-edged adventure and character-first drama. If you're into Supergirl actually being put through the wringer (and punching back), this seems built for you.
The cast
- Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl — You know her from 'House of the Dragon ', and she already popped up in James Gunn's 'Superman '.
- Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll — A young English actor who showed up in '3 Body Problem'.
- Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem — Credits include 'Daens'. He is the one who poisons Krypto in the footage we've seen.
- Jason Momoa as Lobo — Yes, after Aquaman, Momoa is now playing the cigar-chomping bounty hunter. Wild pivot, honestly a great fit.
- David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman — Reprising his role from Gunn's 'Superman'.
- David Krumholtz as Zor-El — Kara's father. You'll also know him as Bernard from 'The Santa Clause'.
- Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze — Kara's mother. Previously in '1899' and 'My Mother's Wedding'.
- Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll — Has appeared in 'Victoria' and played Hamza Bey in 'Dracula Untold'.
Trailers, promos, and other bits
The final trailer landed on June 3, 2026, with tickets going on sale alongside it. Milly Alcock also hit the promo trail hard, including a stop at a 'Supergirl' event in Brazil on June 15, 2026.
Release date and DCU placement
'Supergirl' opens in theaters on June 26, 2026. It's the second movie in DC Studios' new DC Universe, and the expectations are high: new cast, new tone, and a version of Kara that actually feels lived-in.
