Steven Universe is heading back to screens with a revival-sequel in the works at Cartoon Network, and a fresh update says development is picking up speed—another big win in the network’s nostalgia-fueled comeback.

Steven Universe is coming back — not as a redo, but as a full-on sequel/spin-off centered on Lars. And yes, it is actually moving forward.

Quick catch-up: what this new show is

The new series is called 'Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars'. It is being produced with Cartoon Network and is planned to release on Prime Video. Rebecca Sugar is back, executive producing alongside Ian Jones-Quartey. Sugar revealed the project at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, framing it as a continuation of the original story rather than a reboot.

The latest update (and what it means)

Ian Jones-Quartey just checked in on social media to say the team is still at it. No big rollout yet, but the important part is the lights are on and people are working.

"Yes, we are still working on Lars Of The Stars but I don't have any news to share yet. Hopefully soon!"

Is that a massive info dump? Nope. But a year-plus after the announcement, a clear 'we are still working' from an executive producer is exactly the kind of health check fans want.

What the show is actually about

This isn't Steven back on Earth. The focus shifts to Lars and his spacefaring crew, who are out there smuggling contraband, dodging the authorities, and digging into the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire. So: pirate missions, weird corners of Gem history, and plenty of trouble across the galaxy.

Why focusing on Lars makes sense

The original series wrapped Steven's arc cleanly — we got the show, a TV movie, and then the epilogue series 'Steven Universe Future ' to cap it all off. But the universe itself was always bigger than one character. The episode 'Lars of the Stars' back in Season 5 basically set up this premise already, with Lars stepping into the captain role and teaming up with gem friends to help people scattered by the empire. It was a great seed that the main run didn't have time to fully grow. Now it gets room to breathe.

The slightly unusual part

Cartoon Network has been dusting off its most-loved titles lately (a new Regular Show project is on deck), but this one breaks from the usual pattern. It's a sequel, not a simple revival, and while it's produced with Cartoon Network, the plan is to release it on Prime Video. Odd pairing on paper, but if it means the show gets made and seen, I'm not complaining.

What we know so far

  • Title: 'Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars'
  • Status: In active production; no release date yet
  • Where to watch: Planned for Prime Video
  • Producers: Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey (both executive producers)
  • Premise: Lars and his pirate crew smuggle contraband, evade authorities, and uncover secrets of the fallen Gem Empire
  • Cast: No returning voice cast confirmed yet
  • Origin of the idea: Spun out of the Season 5 episode 'Lars of the Stars'

Bottom line: it's real, it's happening, and we'll get the hard details (date, cast, trailers, all of it) when the team is ready. I'll update when that switch flips.
