Star Trek Hits Pause: 2026 Has the Throwbacks Every Classic Fan Has Been Waiting For
Star Trek suddenly has no TV series in the pipeline for the first time in years, after Paramount canceled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — but fans won’t be idling at impulse, with fresh releases and an incoming second season still warping in this year.
Star Trek TV is weirdly quiet right now. Like, tumbleweeds. But if you are still in the mood to boldly go, this year is stacking the bookshelf with a surprising amount of Trek.
Where TV (and movies ) stand
For the first time in a long time, there are no new Star Trek shows actively in development. Paramount pulled the plug on 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' and, per the report, the upcoming second season will be its last. Yeah, that phrasing is odd and a little confusing, but that is how it was put.
'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' is also wrapping up, set to end after a fifth season that should land next year. There is chatter about a possible follow-up called 'Star Trek: Year One,' but it has not been greenlit. Bottom line: no fresh Trek projects on TV or in theaters right now.
What you can read instead
TrekCore flagged a bunch of new books aimed squarely at old-school fans. There is a mix of fiction, art, and deep-dive retrospectives, including a big 60th anniversary release.
- 'The Peacemakers' (Nov 17) — A new 'Deep Space Nine' novel by Una McCormack that centers on Jake Sisko five years after the Dominion War. Jake is back on Earth, trying to finish a book about what happened and getting pulled at by both Starfleet and Bajorans who want their say. Then he hears rumors about Starfleet and his father that could blow up his life, so he ducks out on an archaeological tour. That is when the murders start.
- 'Star Trek: The Original Voyages — A Visual History' (Nov 10) — The first of a two-volume retrospective from Kyle Newman and Jeff Bond. It is a 416-page hardcover loaded with hundreds of rare images and covers the franchise across TV, films, novels, comics, video games, merchandise, and more. Timed to the 60th anniversary. Volume two arrives in 2027.
- 'Star Trek: Picard — To Defy Fate' (Apr 28) — Dayton Ward brings Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher face to face with a very upgraded Wesley Crusher, who can now hop through space and time and shows up to warn them that something bad is coming.
- 'The Art of Star Trek: Lower Decks' (May 5) — An animation art book digging into the look and design of the series.
- 'Star Trek Archives: 100 Artifacts and Stories from the Final Frontier' (Aug 18) — Up for preorder now. A curated set of 100 objects and the stories behind them from across the franchise's long history.
- 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — The Making of the Classic Film ' (Sep 1) — A movie retrospective focused on the whales-era fan favorite.
If Trek is taking a breather on screen, at least the book slate is doing the heavy lifting. Honestly, that DS9 murder thread with Jake sounds like a sleeper hit waiting to happen.
