Smaller role, bigger scares: Colin Farrell’s Penguin returns in The Batman Part II
Colin Farrell reveals his Penguin is a fleeting menace in The Batman Part II, as the sequel swells its cast and plunges deeper into Gotham’s shadows.
Here is the curveball: Colin Farrell says the Penguin barely shows up in The Batman: Part II... and the movie is somehow even darker. Not exactly what you expect after HBO turned his Gotham gangster into a breakout.
So, how much Penguin are we getting?
According to Farrell, Oswald Cobblepot pops up in just two scenes in the sequel. Two. That is a sharp cutback for a character who just headlined HBO's The Penguin and basically stole every moment he had in Matt Reeves ' Gotham the first time around.
The vibe this time: meaner, scarier, heavier
Farrell told ScreenRant, while he was out promoting Sugar season 2, that he has read the entire script for The Batman: Part II, which is co-written by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin. He could not say enough about it, and yeah, the tone is not getting any sunnier. He described this chapter as darker, more terrifying, and emotionally weightier than the first film.
"I got to read from the first to last page, and it is really magnificent."
Point is, even with limited screen time, it sounds like Cobblepot is still going to leave a mark. Less presence, more pressure.
- Farrell says Penguin appears in only two scenes in The Batman: Part II
- The sequel’s script is co-written by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin
- He has read the whole thing and called it "really magnificent"
- Tone check: darker, scarier, and more emotionally heavy than the first movie
- Comments came in a ScreenRant interview during Farrell’s Sugar season 2 press run
- Surprising move given HBO’s The Penguin just turned Cobblepot into a fan-favorite power player
If you were expecting a full-on Penguin takeover in Part II, adjust expectations. Sounds like Reeves is keeping him mostly in the shadows — which, honestly, might make him even more dangerous.
