Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is off to a flyer at the box office and now eyes a massive global debut.

Opening in China with a midday haul of $16.5 million, Spider- Man: Brand New Day was projected to finish its first day at roughly $37.4 million—the best opening day for a U.S. superhero movie there since Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That early surge also topped the recent benchmark set by Venom: The Last Dance in the territory, per THR’s early estimates—an encouraging sign for a genre that’s had a tougher time reconnecting with Chinese audiences in recent years.

Opening weekend is tracking around $465 million worldwide.

Global stakes

As Deadline reports, the film ’s global debut is currently pegged at about $465 million. If it lands there or higher, it would be Sony’s second-biggest worldwide opening ever, trailing only Spider-Man: No Way Home, which blasted past $600 million on its first weekend.

On screen, Tom Holland ’s Peter Parker steps into a darker chapter where no one remembers his identity—positioning this installment as a bridge to the character’s future in the franchise. He’s not swinging solo, either.

Stateside demand looks strong: North American presales are reportedly around $80 million, slightly ahead of No Way Home’s $78 million in advance tickets, per Deadline.
