Nearly a decade since they were last seen together, Selena Gomez cheered on Demi Lovato at the tour kickoff—then hit Instagram in tears, raving it was one of the best shows and that the vocals blew her away.

Selena Gomez showed up for Demi Lovato in a big way, and yes, we finally got the photo. The two hugged it out backstage at the opening night of Lovato's new tour in Orlando, their first public reunion in almost 10 years. If you grew up on their Disney era, this one lands.

What went down in Orlando

Lovato, 33, kicked off the It's Not That Deep Tour at the Kia Center in Orlando, Florida. Gomez, also 33, was in the building early enough to catch opener Adéla — fans grabbed video of her vibing along — and then stayed for Lovato's set, which doubled as a nostalgia sprint: Joe Jonas popped out and joined Lovato for a throwback duet of This Is Me and On the Line. Low-key surreal to see that circle close on stage.

Backstage, Gomez and Lovato hugged, and Gomez slapped a heart emoji on the photo she shared to Instagram. She also posted a short review that read like someone who lost her voice singing along.

"I am in tears, [Demi Lovato]. This was hands down one of the best shows. Oh and the VOCALS? Psh *blown away*."

How we got here

  • Early 2000s: They meet as kids on Barney & Friends, then hit Disney stardom together. In 2009, they costar in Princess Protection Program. Lovato later said it was weird pretending to bicker on camera because they never fought in real life back then.
  • 2010: The friendship looks wobbly. When a fan asks Lovato how Gomez is doing, Lovato fires off a pointed "Ask Taylor" — a nod to Gomez's close friendship with Taylor Swift (36). Cue years of rumored tension.
  • April 2020: Lovato tells Harper's Bazaar they are "not friends" anymore, while still wishing Gomez well. Around the same time, reporting makes it clear there is no drama — just distance.
  • August 2025: Gomez says on the Therapuss podcast that it has been great watching her former Disney crowd — Lovato, the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus — do their thing as adults.
  • September 2025: On Watch What Happens Live, Lovato calls Gomez's public support "really, really sweet" and congratulates her on the then-upcoming wedding to Benny Blanco. Gomez and Blanco tie the knot on September 27, 2025, at the Sea Crest Nursery in Santa Barbara, California.
  • March (this year): Lovato tells the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast she felt the pressure of those Disney-era comparisons when she was young, but credits her mom for drilling in the idea that there is room for everyone. She says she is grateful for the friendship she has, and continues to have, with Gomez.
  • April 13 (Monday): Gomez shows up at opening night of Lovato's It's Not That Deep Tour, posts the hug photo, and gushes over the vocals. First public reunion in nearly a decade, achieved.

The tour itself

Lovato's back in arenas for the first time since 2018. The It's Not That Deep Tour runs through the spring and wraps in Houston on May 25. If opening night is any hint — surprise duets, full-circle cameos, and Gomez literally in tears — expect more moments.
