Sam Reid admits he initially misread a pivotal scene in The Vampire Lestat — and breaks down what he got wrong and why it matters.

AMC took its Anne Rice saga in a new direction this year: season 3 is rebranded as The Vampire Lestat, and the spotlight swings from Louis to Lestat stomping around 1980s France. And yes, that glossy-looking transformation scene everyone keeps talking about? It was almost a very different vibe.

Sam Reid had a full-on panic at script 3

Sam Reid, who plays Lestat de Lioncourt, says he was seriously rattled when he first read episode 3. The sequence frames Lestat’s turning in the style of an ’80s music video while he performs the song 'Your Biggest Fan' — all neon and stagecraft. Reid felt that take risked turning a brutal, life-altering violation into a cheeky set piece. He was so upset he literally chucked the script across the room, according to showrunner Rolin Jones in Entertainment Weekly.

Reid even told EW he initially read it like a pop-diva gloss on an abusive moment — his words were spicier — and could not figure out how he was supposed to play it. Honestly, I get why he panicked; on paper, that concept sounds like a detour into kitsch.

"Then obviously, you get to the end, and it’s a much better payoff. I was just blown away, really."

Finishing the episode changed everything for him. The show doesn’t leave the moment as pure spectacle; it circles back and lets the horror land. Lestat is forced to relive what happened, haunted by Magnus, and the flashbacks spiral until he literally crashes his car. So the glitter is the trap — the trauma is the point.

Quick catch-up on the season pivot

After two seasons centered on Louis de Pointe du Lac, this third season zeroes in on Lestat’s past and persona — including his climb toward unapologetic rock-god status. The style shift is intentional, and when episode 3 clicks into its final movement, the emotional math finally adds up.
