The pivotal events of Middle-earth's history are about to unfold.

Summary

  • Rings of Power Season 2 will premiere at the end of August.
  • Release dates for each episode have been revealed.
  • The second season will bring us closer to the epic events known as the War of the Last Alliance.

Although heavily criticized by die-hard fans, The Rings of Power Season 1 turned out to be a huge critical and commercial sensation, becoming the most popular show on Prime Video. Amazon invested a staggering $465 million, and while the show may not compare to the epic scale of Peter Jackson's films, that doesn't take away from the quality of the production.

As a result of its success, the series has been picked up for a second and even a third season, and new episodes covering the events of the Second Age of Middle-earth will be hitting our screens very soon. Let's take a look at the release schedule for The Rings of Power Season 2.

Rings of Power Season 2 Release Schedule

In May 2024, Amazon Prime Video disclosed some details about the Season 2 episodes. It was revealed that the first three episodes will arrive in the streaming service's library in late August, and the series will run through early October. Let's check out the full release schedule for The Rings of Power Season 2 episodes:

  • S2E1, TBA — August 29, 2024
  • S2E2, TBA — August 29, 2024
  • S2E3, TBA — August 29, 2024
  • S2E4, TBA — September 5, 2024
  • S2E5, TBA — September 12, 2024
  • S2E6, TBA — September 19, 2024
  • S2E7, TBA — September 26, 2024
  • S2E8, TBA — October 3, 2024

Unfortunately, Prime has not yet revealed the titles of the upcoming episodes, but we do know that the first, third, seventh and eighth episodes were directed by Charlotte Brändström, who was responsible for the Udûn and The Eye episodes of the first season. The remaining four episodes were directed by Sanaa Hamri and Louise Hooper, who had no previous experience with The Rings of Power. It is not known which episodes they worked on.

What Can We Expect in the Second Season?

Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have hinted at what we can expect from the second season of The Rings of Power. In an interview with Total Film, the showrunners noted that 'the action picks back up with Sauron at the height of his new powers, and this time he's got a new disguise as well.'

In the first season finale, Halbrand was revealed to be Sauron, and now he does not hide his presence. In addition, according to the latest trailer, he will now appear as a handsome male elf, just as in Tolkien's books. And his schemes will lead to a great confrontation that will affect all of Middle-earth:

'This time, Sauron's agenda sets everything in motion: Adar [Sam Hazeldine, taking over the role from Joseph Mawle] and his army of orcs; Galadriel [Morfydd Clark], Elrond [Robert Aramayo] and Gil-galad [Benjamin Walker] and their armies of elves — all of which will come crashing together in the most ambitious battle our show has seen yet, a battle from which many big players may not make it out alive.'

Most likely, McKay and Payne were alluding to the greatest battle of the War of the Last Alliance, the Siege of Barad-dûr, in which elves and men confronted Sauron's forces and destroyed his physical shell. Sadly, Gil-galad and Elendil were killed in the battle, but it is likely that the second season will only lead up to those events.

Until then, the writers will have to deal with the artifacts that served as the source of the show's title. Celebrimbor, the Elven blacksmith who forged the Three Rings of Power in the first season, will apparently play no small part. They will go to Gil-galad, Galadriel and Elrond. At the same time, Sauron will forge the Seven Rings for the Dwarves and the Nine Rings for the Men.
