Ride or Die: who is Billy? Ed Skrein's character is the reason episode 7 ends the way it does

Prime Video 's assassin buddy comedy plants one genuinely soft thing in the middle of all the gunfire — and then shows you exactly why it did that.

Billy Donovan, played by Ed Skrein, enters Ride or Die from the wrong side of the ledger: a crime syndicate man tangled up in the stolen £24 million that Judith (Hannah Waddingham) and Debbie (Octavia Spencer) spend the season running from and after. He should be a complication. Instead, over eight episodes, he defects — first into a reluctant ally, then into something the show hadn't given its retired assassin before: a real romantic possibility. By episode 7, Billy is offering to disappear to Cambodia with Judith once the mess is settled.

Which is precisely what gets him killed.

The Geneva Convention, and why it ends in a throat-slit

Episode 7 stages the season's big set piece: a Geneva bank heist meant to extract the Albanians' money and lure Ana — the vengeful assassin on Judith's trail — into a trap. The trap works in the sense that Ana shows up. It fails in every other sense. In the crossfire between Albanians, Interpol, and local police, Ana runs the table, and the episode's recap reads like a checklist of worst outcomes:

"Ana kills Billy, leaves a Black Mark for Debbie and kidnaps her. "

The logic of the kill is the point. Ana's revenge on Judith isn't a bullet — it's subtraction. Billy was, as one reviewer put it, the one man Judith seemed to be forming a genuine attachment to, so Ana slits his throat and moves on to demolishing the other attachment: she shows the kidnapped Debbie proof that Judith originally picked her up as cover, deleted her law-firm acceptance letter, and once called her "a valuable cover" on tape. Episode 7 ends with Judith's love interest dead and her best friendship poisoned — both by design, both because of who Billy had become to her.

What it sets up

• The finale 's real villain reveal: with Ana rampaging, the show pivots to Bill Nighy's Director and the Agency's practice of recruiting orphaned children — the machine that built both Judith and Ana.
• The reconciliation: Judith and Debbie's blowup over the tape becomes the finale's spine, resolved with a Thelma & Louise homage the Variety review had already invited by calling the show "no Thelma & Louise."
• Nothing further: despite a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score, Amazon canceled the series in September after one season — so Billy's death at the end of episode 7 stands as the show's one irreversible swing, in a story that only got to tell itself once.
