Nickelodeon Star Once Thought Avatar: The Last Airbender Would Flop — How It Proved Them Wrong
After years of waiting, Aang returns in 2026 as Avatar: The Last Airbender launches a brand-new chapter, with The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender landing on Paramount+ later this year to reignite the world of bending.
2026 is shaping up to be a big swing for the Avatar universe. After years of nothing new for Aang and the original crew, we’re finally getting a fresh story that catches up with them as adults. It ’s called 'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender,' and it’s headed straight to Paramount+ later this year.
So, what’s actually going on?
The quick version: the adult Aang feature is a streaming exclusive now (Paramount ditched the theatrical plan), it reportedly leaked online in HD months ahead of release, and the voice cast is different because the characters have aged up. That includes Zuko: Dante Basco isn’t back this time; 'The Walking Dead' alum Steven Yeun is voicing the Fire Lord.
Dante Basco didn’t see this juggernaut coming
Basco, who defined Zuko for a lot of us, shared a story about his first brush with the franchise and how unlikely it felt for Nickelodeon at the time. He was reading the pilot script while surrounded by giant murals of classic Nick shows and thinking… this isn’t that.
"There were like twenty-foot murals of classic Nickelodeon shows, and I’m reading through the script. It’s like this epic anime- inspired Asian tale, and I’m like, 'This is not Nickelodeon.'"
Hard to argue with that read. The original 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' only ran three seasons, but it blew up into the powerhouse we know now, spun off 'The Legend of Korra,' and basically built a modern animated canon out of nowhere.
The adult Aang movie: the messy rollout
This new feature-length chapter has had a bumpy path. First came the switch from theaters to Paramount+ only, which stirred up plenty of debate. Then came the reported HD leak online months before the film ’s actual debut. Not the smoothest glide into the station.
About that Zuko recast
Because the story jumps to the gang as adults, the original kid-era voice actors aren’t reprising their roles here. For Zuko specifically, Steven Yeun is stepping in as the Fire Lord. Fans love Basco in that role (with good reason), so yeah, some folks are bummed. There’s still a plausible path for him to pop back in somewhere down the line, though — this franchise has never been shy about spirit-world visits or flashbacks to younger versions of characters.
What’s next after this?
There’s another TV series on deck: 'Avatar: Seven Havens,' set after Korra in a more hard-edged, dystopian future than we’ve seen before. It’s aiming for Paramount+ in 2027. Between that and the adult Aang movie, the next couple years look busy for Team Avatar.
- 'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender' (feature film ) hits Paramount+ later in 2026; went streaming-only after the theatrical plan was dropped; reportedly leaked in HD months early.
- Adult-era recast across the board; Steven Yeun voices Fire Lord Zuko instead of Dante Basco.
- The original show ended after three seasons, then came 'The Legend of Korra.'
- 'Avatar: Seven Havens' is set after Korra, leaning dystopian, and is expected on Paramount+ in 2027 — a spot where legacy character cameos (and maybe a Basco return in some form) wouldn’t be shocking.
Bottom line: new adult Aang story this year, a controversial rollout, a big Zuko recast, and more Avatar world-building right behind it. Not boring, that’s for sure.
