He didn’t ease into it. On a live video chat this week, James Haven started unpacking the awkwardness of his teenage years — then, in the same breath, moved into the present and said plainly where his heart has always been.
“Trying on a dress that you know does not fit you.”
The line was Haven’s own description of dating girls in high school, shared during a live stream on August 6, 2026 , hosted on Romi Imbelli’s Substack. In that conversation, he publicly came out as gay. He also indicated he isn’t seeing anyone right now.

Haven and Imbelli go back more than 23 years as close friends who eventually became a couple. They married in an intimate ceremony in Laguna Beach, then separated just 15 days later. Imbelli filed for an annulment, citing fraud, and the marriage was later nullified.
Despite the split, they reconnected. Haven first came out to her privately, and Imbelli has continued to describe him as her “life partner” and “one of the greatest loves of her life.”

Haven said he spent years hoping his attraction to men was a phase. At 18, he entered his first serious relationship with a woman, partly to feel “one of the guys” and find a sense of safety. The breakup, he said, was painful and cost him friendships, forcing him to confront what he’d been denying.
He was later briefly linked to Christian singer Rebecca St. James, but kept most of his love life well out of view. That discretion tracks with his sister Angelina Jolie, who has said she hasn’t dated publicly since her divorce, while Haven has largely stayed private post-annulment.
As a onetime actor and producer — and son of Jon Voight — Haven spent years adjacent to Hollywood glare, from that infamous Oscars- night kiss with Jolie to advocacy work with the Artivist Film Festival. After going public with his sexuality on August 6, he remains officially single.
