Meet Andrew Lloyd Webber's Leading Lady: Inside the Life of Madeleine Gurdon
As his marriage to Sarah Brightman faltered, Andrew Lloyd Webber met English equestrian Madeleine Gurdon in 1989; by 1990—just six months after his divorce—their romance was official, a turning point he later detailed in his 2018 memoir.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s love story with English horsewoman Madeleine Gurdon has it all: late-80s theater turbulence, a deep-cut Phantom tidbit, a globe-trotting childhood on her side, three kids together, a devastating family loss, and now a very candid chapter about sobriety where he says she helped pull him back from the brink. Here’s the shape of it.
- 1971: Lloyd Webber marries Sarah Hugill (they divorce in 1983)
- 1984: Marries Sarah Brightman (they divorce in 1990)
- 1989: Meets Madeleine Gurdon through friends, as his marriage to Brightman unravels
- 1990: Relationship with Gurdon is confirmed publicly about six months after the Brightman divorce
- 1991: Marries Gurdon
- 1992, 1993, 1996: They welcome Alastair, William, and Isabella
- 2023: Lloyd Webber’s son Nicholas (from his first marriage) dies at 43 after an 18-month battle with gastric cancer
- April 2026: Lloyd Webber says he is a recovering alcoholic, sought inpatient help 16 months earlier, and attends AA
How they met (and the backstage wrinkle)
Lloyd Webber says he met Madeleine Gurdon in 1989 via mutual friends while his marriage to Sarah Brightman was falling apart. In his 2018 memoir, Unmasked, he wrote that Brightman’s alleged affair with the original Phantom keyboard player was a turning point. He stressed he remained fond of Brightman, but after that, the marriage never really recovered. The relationship with Gurdon went public in 1990, roughly six months after the Brightman divorce, and they married the next year.
So who is Madeleine Gurdon?
Born in 1962, Gurdon comes from a military family: her father, Brigadier Adam Gurdon, served in the Black Watch (the storied Scottish regiment), and her mother, Gillian Thomson, was the daughter of a Black Watch officer too. His postings moved the family around the world — Cyprus, then-Tanganyika (now part of Tanzania), Hong Kong.
Gurdon competed as an equestrian for nearly a decade and was a member of the Easton Harriers branch of The Pony Club in the U.K. She won The Pony Club’s 1981 eventing championships and later returned to lead the organization as its president in 2010.
During her riding years, she also designed a country-wear line called The Done Thing, named after her favorite dun-colored horse. Today she breeds championship horses at two studs: Watership Down Stud, near the couple’s home at Sydmonton Court, and Kiltinan Castle in Ireland.
And yes, she’s stepped into her husband’s world too: Gurdon is a director at the Really Useful Group, Lloyd Webber’s production company, as well as his LW Theatres company.
Family, both the joy and the heartbreak
Lloyd Webber and Gurdon have three children together: sons Alastair (born 1992) and William (1993), and daughter Isabella (1996). From his first marriage to Sarah Hugill, he has daughter Imogen and son Nicholas. In 2023, Nicholas died at 43 after an 18-month fight with gastric cancer. Lloyd Webber shared the news himself:
'I am shattered to have to announce that my beloved elder son Nick died a few hours ago in Basingstoke Hospital. His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft. Thank you for all your thoughts during this difficult time.'
On getting sober — and why he credits Madeleine
In April 2026, the EGOT-winning composer opened up to The Times of London about quitting alcohol after realizing how much damage his drinking was doing at home. He said things had slid into a spiral and, about 18 months earlier, the family was in a desperate state — to the point where Madeleine felt she could not go on. He now calls himself a recovering alcoholic and says he asked for help 16 months ago, checked into an inpatient program, and began attending Alcoholics Anonymous.
'Sixteen months ago I decided that I needed help and it’s the best thing that ever happened to me... What I love about it is, you go into a room and everybody’s equal. I’ve made friends that I wouldn’t have thought possible.'
The bigger picture
From a chance 1989 introduction to a long marriage that’s spanned hit shows, stud farms, and some brutally hard chapters, Gurdon has been a steady presence through Lloyd Webber’s career highs and personal lows. The behind-the-scenes Phantom detail is a wild footnote, but the headline now is simpler: decades on, they’re still a team — and by his telling, that partnership helped save his life.
