At a Q&A following a screening of her concert film Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour Live in Paris, Katy Perry shifted the conversation to Dolly Parton, praising not just the music that filled arenas but the philanthropy that funded libraries and lifted communities. Perry talked about Parton’s songwriting, her generosity, and the standard she set for artists who came after her.
“She was an Earth Angel, so I think her legacy is one to follow and look up to forever, and I just think it 's going to continue to expand, and I think everyone should emulate her. She's kind of like the bar,” Perry said.
Perry urged the crowd to dig back into Parton’s catalog — from “Jolene” to “9 to 5” — calling her “one of the most legendary songwriters of all time.” News of Parton’s death, according to statements from her representatives, said she died after a brief battle with cancer. She was 80.
The screening-room salute followed a moment onstage in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, where Perry also honored Parton, describing her as kind, funny, and immensely talented.
