Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed: who is the killer? The show reveals him to viewers by episode 3

Most murder mysteries make you wait for the name. This one gives it up in episode 2 and then makes you watch the wrong person get arrested.

The killer is Dennis, played by Murray Bartlett. He is introduced as the older boyfriend of Trevor (Brandon Flynn), the camboy whose murder starts the series — and he is also a professional, working for someone whose identity the season keeps back. He killed Trevor and then had a hard drive full of compromising videos and photographs wiped. The relationship was cover for a cleanup.

That reframes the whole show. Paula Saunders (Tatiana Maslany), a divorced fact-checker in Queens, watches Trevor get attacked mid-session, receives ransom demands, finds his body, panics, runs, and becomes the prime suspect. The audience already knows she didn't do it and already knows who did. What they're watching is the distance between those two facts closing, slowly, at her expense.

How early it comes out, exactly

Viewers learn Trevor's murderer in episode 2. Episode 3, "Chunnel," fills in the method and connects the online scammer to Trevor by the end of the hour.

Rather than withholding the killer's identity, the show reveals it in episode two, TellTale TV noted in its 2026 review — a structure that prioritizes information asymmetry over plot mechanics.

The episode 3 sequence is where the show's tone gets established, and it's largely procedural:

• The tissue — Paula left one at the crime scene. Dennis traces it back to a pizza restaurant, and from there to nearby schools.
• The pink cleats — he plants tracking devices inside cleats at those schools, then waits for Paula's daughter Hazel to pick up a pair.
• The wrong woman — the tracker moves. Dennis follows Mallory (Jessy Hodges), Hazel's mother and the wife of Paula's ex-husband Karl, tries repeatedly to hit her with his car, and finally forces her off her bicycle.
• The tattoo — he checks her for a butterfly tattoo, the only marker he has for Paula, doesn't find one, takes her jewelry and cash, and stages a mugging.

What Dennis does with the rest of the season

He keeps cleaning. Frank Budkins, a private investigator Mallory hired to build a custody case against Paula, photographs Dennis entering Paula's apartment and assumes he's her secret boyfriend. Dennis kills him to keep the photograph out of evidence.

Paula eventually shoots Dennis in the head after he abducts her. He survives it. Whoever he works for then throws him off a roof and stages the fall as a suicide, leaving a note confessing to the murders of both Trevor and Sky — which is what finally exonerates Paula. Detective Gonzalez (Dolly de Leon) doesn't believe any of it and has nothing to charge her with. Paula wins the custody trial.

Who hired Dennis is never named. The season points at a blackmail operation with real money behind it and stops there.

The twist that isn't about Dennis at all

The finale 's last move flips the premise. Paula gets a video message containing footage from Portland two years earlier, showing her hitting her neighbor Caleb with her car. The audio includes Caleb shouting "I vouched for you!" — which turns an accident into a question.

She is cleared of the murder she didn't commit and blackmailed over the death she may have.

Created by David J. Rosen, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed ran ten episodes of 28 to 40 minutes on Apple TV from 20 May 2026, finishing at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes across 58 reviews and 72 on Metacritic. Rosen was still publicly hoping for a renewal after the finale aired. As of 23 September 2026, Apple hasn't announced one.
