Ransom Canyon: what did Kit do? Even his own brother had the wrong idea
Netflix's Texas western spent a season pointing at Kit Russell for a death he didn't cause. Here's what he really did that night, what he let everyone believe, and how his younger brother read it exactly wrong.
For most of season 1, the show lets you assume the obvious thing about Kit Russell, and so does the person who knows him best. The obvious thing is wrong, and the truth isn't much better.
Kit (Casey W. Johnson) is Lucas Russell's older brother and legal guardian, which in practice means he is a twenty-something with a taste for drinking who is also the only adult in a teenager's life. April Blair's adaptation of Jodi Thomas' novels launched on Netflix in April 2025 with ten episodes, built around a single unanswered question: who killed Randall Kirkland, son of rancher Staten Kirkland.
The money, and what Lucas made of it
The first thing that puts Kit under suspicion is cash. In episode 3 he turns up flush despite not showing up for work, and when Lucas asks where it came from, Kit says he has a side hustle. Lucas doesn't believe him. By episode 4, Reid Collins has told Lauren Brigman that Kit phoned him the night Randall died.
That is the entire evidentiary trail the audience gets for several episodes: unexplained money, a phone call, and a brother who won't answer a direct question.

What he was actually doing
Kit was having an affair with Margaret Brigman — the sheriff's wife, Lauren's mother. Margaret was drunk behind the wheel of a blue Ford pickup when she hit Randall's vehicle and killed him. Kit wasn't driving. What he did was clean it up.

He called in a favor. Reid and Tim owed him for getting them out of trouble over a drug buy in Bandera, so Kit had them take the truck back out to Bandera, scrub the VIN, and get rid of it. Months later, Reid is the one who tells the sheriff's department, and in episode 8, "The Bad Seed," officers take Kit out of his trailer.
Kit offers a full confession to a fatal hit-and-run he did not commit, in exchange for a reduced sentence. Sheriff Dan Brigman works out he's lying because Kit can't supply details only the driver would have.
Where his brother lands
Lucas believes it. He believes it enough to offer to take the charge himself — he's younger, his record is clean — and Kit turns him down flat, on the grounds that Lucas is the one who gets to leave town. Staten fires Lucas over the arrest, which makes bail impossible. Lucas visits the jail and asks for the truth outright. Kit keeps covering for Margaret.
He is only released after Margaret confesses and Dan arrests his own wife. Lucas signs emancipation papers by the finale.
The part that comes back
Season 2 premiered on Netflix on 23 July 2026 with eight episodes, and Johnson was upgraded from recurring to series regular. The show puts Kit into a romance with Lauren Brigman — the daughter of the woman he was sleeping with and went to jail for — and stages a kiss for Lucas to walk in on.
"Lauren is really caught in a pull between two young men," showrunner April Blair told Deadline in 2026, describing the brothers as two different versions of a future.
For the record: Kit spends season 1 protecting a woman who lets him do it, and season 2 dating her daughter. The show has not yet decided whether that is a redemption arc.
