Josh Brolin’s Missed Bond Opportunity: The Role That Got Away
Josh Brolin nearly became James Bond in the 1980s, but a last-minute twist changed his career forever. Discover how this close call shaped his path and why fans now want Henry Cavill to take on the iconic role.
Josh Brolin is best known for his unforgettable turns as Thanos and Cable, but his career could have taken a wildly different direction if not for a twist of fate in the early 1980s. The actor once came close to landing the role of James Bond in the 1983 film Octopussy , only to have his hopes dashed at the last moment. Reflecting on the experience, Brolin shared how Roger Moore’s unexpected decision to return as 007 changed everything for him.
How Brolin Lost Out on 007
Brolin recalled the whirlwind process that nearly made him the next Bond. He had already traveled overseas, met with the producers, and even started training with the stunt team. Everything seemed set, with Cubby Broccoli giving him the green light. But just as he was preparing to move for the role, the call came: Moore had decided to reprise his part, and Brolin was out.
[Roger Moore] was out, so I flew over and I met all the people. And I got my apartment and I started working with the stuntmen and Cubby Broccoli hired me. We hadn’t signed any papers yet. I got back to L.A. to get my stuff because I was going to be gone for a year. And I got a call saying Roger decided to do one more, and I was out.
Though Brolin would go on to make his mark in blockbuster franchises, the chance to join the legendary 007 legacy slipped through his fingers at the last second.
Brolin’s Bond Aspirations and Denis Villeneuve
Even though he never wore the tuxedo, Brolin’s performance as a young Agent K in Men in Black 3 proved he had the chops for a superspy role. Fans have often wondered if he’d ever consider stepping into the Bond universe now. According to Brolin, there’s only one director who could tempt him to join the franchise: Denis Villeneuve. The actor has a close working relationship with the acclaimed filmmaker, and he’s made it clear that if Villeneuve were to take the helm of a Bond film, he’d jump at the chance.
I didn’t even have to read Dune, even though I knew the story, to wanna do it with Denis; Denis is it for me. We have a very close relationship; he’s a stellar filmmaker. I like working with people I like and who are stellar filmmakers. So I have that with him, and I’m fortunate. So wherever Bond goes, it will go.
While Brolin may not be in the running for 007 anymore, there’s still a possibility he could appear in a future Bond project, especially if Villeneuve is involved.
Henry Cavill: The Next Bond Contender?
With the search for the next James Bond heating up, Henry Cavill has emerged as a fan favorite. He’s got the looks, the charisma, and the acting range to take on the iconic role. Cavill’s performances in films like Argylle and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. have shown he can handle the demands of a secret agent, blending humor, charm, and action with ease.
His portrayal of Gus March-Phillips in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare—a character who inspired Bond—demonstrates his deep understanding of what makes 007 tick. Cavill’s passion for staying true to the source material only strengthens his case. Although he narrowly missed out on the role to Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, many believe he’s still the perfect fit for the next chapter of the franchise.
Octopussy: A Bond Classic Revisited
For those interested in revisiting the film that almost changed Brolin’s life, Octopussy remains a staple of the Bond series. Directed by John Glenn and starring Roger Moore, Maud Adams, and Louis Jourdan, the movie earned $67.9 million at the box office and continues to spark debate among fans. It’s now available to stream on Amazon Video in the US.
