Joseph Duggar, 31, has been extradited from Arkansas to Florida nearly two weeks after his arrest on charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. He is being held at Bay County Jail as of Tuesday, March 31.

Another Duggar is in the headlines, and not for TV. Joseph Duggar has been moved from Arkansas to Florida to face charges tied to an alleged incident in 2020 involving a 9-year-old girl. Here is how this got from a vacation in Panama City Beach to a jail cell in Bay County.

Where things stand

Joseph, 31, is currently in custody at the Bay County Jail as of Tuesday, March 31, after being extradited from Arkansas. The transfer happened roughly two weeks after his arrest in Arkansas connected to the Florida case.

What authorities say happened in 2020

According to the Bay County Sheriff's Office, the alleged victim — now 14 — was on a family trip to Panama City Beach when Joseph asked her to sit on his lap. Under a blanket, he allegedly touched her in the genital area. He apologized at the time, and there were no further incidents reported then. Authorities say they were brought into it after the girl's father confronted Joseph earlier this month; Joseph allegedly admitted what he did to the father and later to detectives from the Tontitown Police Department in Arkansas.

Charges at a glance

  • Florida: Charged with lewd or lascivious molestation of a child under 12 and lewd or lascivious conduct by a person 18 or older.
  • Arkansas: Also facing four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in the second degree and four counts of second-degree false imprisonment.
  • Kendra Duggar: Joseph's wife, 27, was arrested on March 20 on the same Arkansas charges and released on a $1,470 bond. The couple shares four children.

The Kendra piece, explained

A source close to the family says Kendra's arrest is not tied to Joseph's Florida case. After Joseph was charged, officials reportedly conducted a home study (standard when kids live in the home). The source claims investigators found two rooms with doorknob locks installed on the outside instead of the inside — which authorities allegedly treated as evidence of unlawful detainment. The source also says the children were removed from the home. That detail about the locks is unusual and, frankly, not a great look.

The TV context you already guessed

The Duggars first broke out on TLC's "19 Kids and Counting." The family has weathered scandals before, most notably involving Joseph's brother Josh. As a teenager, Josh molested multiple girls, including some of his sisters. Years later, he was arrested in 2021 on federal charges of receiving and possessing child pornography. He pleaded not guilty, was convicted, and is serving a 151-month sentence. He's still in prison.

Josh, from prison, weighs in

Earlier this month, Josh spoke out through his attorney after news of Joseph's arrest. The lawyer told the Daily Mail that Josh is "deeply saddened" and pushed back on what he called "false accusations" and the "stigma" surrounding his brother. The statement continued:

"He lives with the painful reality of how false accusations can destroy a life. He understands how the targeting of a person for publicity can twist the truth into sensationalized fiction."
